Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

Tamandua were supposed to be housed with the marmosets, I hope this is still the plan, as the marmosets hardly ever go outside. The tamanduas hopefully will use the outside area.
is this in Miniature Monkeys?

That would be good. But bear in mind I regularly visit Colchester and hardly ever see the Tamanduas there, they've had offspring as well. Hopefully it is not the same at Chester.

I think when I went in 2019, I managed to catch a glimpse of an anteater walking in the South America exhibit..
Though from what I hear this is not very common.

The best time I saw an Anteater at Chester was when they were in their former enclosure which is now off-show to the public. I haven't really seen them in the Capybara enclosure yet although some people have been lucky.

It's funny, but I've spent a lot of time over the last four(?) years visits at the Andean bear enclosure and regulalry hear "there's the Anteater! You never see the Anteater out!" Instinctively I'll turn around to get a picture or two, then realise I've seen them plenty already.

It is Miniature Monkeys where the marmosets are.

I've seen the giant anteater in the capybara paddock at Chester a few times, but they are very hard to see at Chester. The ones at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Blackpool Zoo are far more active. The most eactive tamandua I've seen were in the Clore at London.

The first time I saw them was 2016 in the old kangaroo/yellow mongoose and bear pit enclosures
I've seen them more in the capybara paddock than I did in the old enclosure which is offshow but when they were behind the giraffe house I never saw them did anyone actually see them there

At the AGM last year it was announced that consruction for grasslands will start in 2023 and the area will open in 2026.

The plans are on Cheshire West and Chester Coumcil planning applications site. I was going to paste a link but the planning site is closed for maintenance until 6th February.

Surely a better option would be to do it in "stages" - build the area bit-by-bit over a period of time, saving the mixed herbivore exhibit (and, of course, the hotel) for last.

Or is this what they're doing (presumably why they have the secretary bird now)?

As the development is mainly the mixed habitat, restaurant and overnight stay accommodation, its difficult really to build in stages and also the holding zoo was built partly to allow this kind of developmentnto be carried out in one go, this will also reduce costs and disruption overall. Hopefully work may start later this year.

A new dusky pademelon joey has been born recently at Chester Zoo.

Information comes from a video posted on the Chester Zoo Facebook page.

Technically it was born around six months ago (and only now emerging from the pouch), though its not uncommon for females to conceive and have a developing joey while the previous joey is at the stage of independence.

Fingers crossed for more successful breeding of this species!

I have no records after 2018

# indicates young did not survie for 30 days.

I think that the fawn announced by the zoo is the one born earlier this year. They are very slow in the press office sometimes, which is ironic as the reason they stopped printing arrivals and births in the zoo magazine was because th information would be out of date.
Be nice if a few will make it back to Pilipinas and reintroduction ar some point. Some years back they needed to cut down on breeding due to too few spaces. Imagine .... release project

I remember not so long ago when Chester had three seperate groups in the zoo- about nine deer in total. Now much reduced to a single pair(?) + offspring.

Trial releases into protected areas are happening in the Philippines, quite a few being captive bred over there, Warty Pigs too
