Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

I remember not so long ago when Chester had three seperate groups in the zoo- about nine deer in total. Now much reduced to a single pair(?) + offspring.
Back in June 2012, there was only one doe: the buck had been killed by dogs that got into the zoo. A group of assorted ZooChatters had one of our 'walk & talk sessions' with Tim Rowlands (long-serving Curator of Mammals) on the 23rd. He had just explained what had happened and turned to look on the other side of the Bats Bridge, when a newborn fawn appeared. He was on his walkie-talkie immediately.

Agreed makes no sense at all. Have the spaces and the faces... think warties too and breed up numbers for release once we are succesfull why stop unless you cannot be bothered to save species and create the building blocks for species and habitat restoration in situ. Amen!

I have no knowledge of why Chester's holding has reduced so much, but this interesting deer still clearly needs as much help as it can get breeding-wise.

I’ve only visited the zoo twice so don’t know much about jt and I have a few questions
. Do the aye aye have outdoor access
. Is there a species of deer in with the okapi
. What animals lives behind the roan antelope
. How many padamelons are there in total
. What are the rhinos names
. Is there indoor viewing for warthogs
. I visited in July 2021 and there was 2 young warty pigs on the Cheetah bridge when was they born
. Also how many of the following species are there:
Philippine spotted deer
Visayan warty pigs
Bongo
Anoa
Congo buffalo
Thankyou in advance

The Aye Ayes have no outdoor access and the other species in with the Okapi is the Red Forest Duiker antelope.

I believe the Bongo are currently off-show.

The aye ayes do not have outdoor access due to them being nocturnal
There are red forest duiker in with the okapi
The animals that live behind the roan antelope are the painted dogs
There are 4 pademons because of the new joey that was born recently
The rhinos names are
Black rhinos= kitani(female), zuri(female), malindi(female) ema elsa(female) ,kasulu(ema's year old daughter) and there isn't any breeding male black rhino at the minute because the current males are sons of the females do There is jummane(son of Malindi), ike the son of zuri and gabe the son of ema
The Indian rhinos are a breeding pair named beni and asha
There used to be indoor viewing for the warthog when they lived in the cattle house but they are currently offshow and there current exhibit near which is before you go into the zoo had no indoor viewing either
There are 3 anoa in the zoo two in islands and one in the cattle house
Can't help you with the bongos you may have to ask bongorob
The animals you said were warty pigs on cheetah Bridge were babirusa born in 2019
Can't help you with the warty pigs aswell sorry

Never been to Chester before myself but would love to go there in the future

Sorry I do not know much about the bongos at the moment.

There is a paddock to the north of the roan antelope which could be considered to be behind the roan antelope. It is empty at the moment and was puropsely left empty because of the construction of Grasslands. It previously held blackbuck, llamas, red-necked wallabies, southern lesser kudu.

Pademelons are kept across the path from the old bush dog enclosure. This enclosure held red-bellied pademelons in the 1960s and early 70s.

I thought they kept a few over by the red pandas.
Yes chester currently hold 6 padmelons my mistake there are 4 in the main exhibit in islands and there are two in the old serval enclosure by the old bear pits yellow mongoose and anteater enclosure and the two males the one who lives in islands and the one who lives in the old serval enclosure they used to live together in the old anteater enclosure opposite the old cassowary enclosure
