Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

Any sign of the Snow leopard cub anyone? My first view of the new enclosure a couple of months ago left me frustrated. I imagine the glare on those windows is going to make photography quite tricky.

Reports elsewhere indicate that the cub has peered through the hatch but mum keeps dragging it back in! Shouldn't be too long now anyway.

A new species at Chester, Moroccan Spiny-tailed Lizard (Uromastyx nigriventris), and reutrning after 16 years Sabana Surinam Toad (Pipa parva). I don't know if either is on show.
Have they already got a Uromastyx sp in the Africa herp cohab?

Is it because they renovated their habitat?

The flock has bred well in past years, with reports of 11 chicks in 2016 and 21 chicks in 2018.

The Wetlands Aviary (opened 2023) would have of course been designed to promote breeding success, which has clearly been successful.

Are the aviaries the flamingos are in, including Heart of Africa fly now?

I think both flocks of flamingos are able to fly. One of my more memorable zoo sights was on a visit to Hillside (now a private collection) and seeing a group of Lesser Flamingos take off in unison and fly across the pond. It happened so fast that it was impossible to photograph, but I will never forget it.

The older birds may be pinioned……flamingos live a long time

I believe the idea of netting was to allow all new flamingoes the ability to fly. I asked a keeper about this a couple of years ago and I’m sure they said that it didn’t work out as some of the juveniles had flown into the netting and also as it’s a walkthrough they were concerned about flamingoes flying onto the boardwalk and interacting with visitors - so they are all pinioned going forward. It’s a shame as the spectacle of them flying would be amazing to witness.

I would guess it may be the male zebra, and he will share access with the giraffe, seems a small space to have them all out at once
Just seen some pictures from the press preview at the Reserve and it looks like all 3 species are mixed at the same time, looks like atleast 5 Blesblok and 1 zebra, so presume the Male.
