I seen it last Saturday. It was on the wooden stump in the back left corner of its aviary. Very nice owl, a lot of people were looking exactly at it but couldn't see it because it blended in with the log as they're very similar colours.

The banteng were out in force yesterday. Anyone know when the youngest calf was born? Looked really young.

I thought the same when I visited on friday, he still looked a bit wobbily. So maybe sometime last week?

Just seen on Facebook post .... 2 new babirusa piglets born. How many does the zoo hold and where are they all kept now? Any ideas how many will move to Islands - are they going to make a larger group?

male is offshow behind the male cheetah paddock, but he can be seen from the bats bridge or anoa bridge sometimes

Is it likely they will join the 2 females and offspring to form a larger group? Howletts used to have a large group of babirusa - would be more impactful for Islands.

In other news.....

Roan antelope calf born.
New roof complete on Tsavo aviary- no more sparrows!
Kitani's horn has fallen off - sign inside says vets don't know why but she is fine.
Male one horned rhino was stuck in enclosure fence for over an hour last week before being rescued.
Chimps have been locked inside for a while now - anyone know why they not allowed outside?
Have only seen 1 sloth on recent visits- has the other been hiding or is it kept separately?

I spoke to a member of staff on sunday about the sloths and he said that they only have the male sloth now - I don't know what happened to the female we did have and he wasn't forthcoming as might be expected.

Kitani knocked her horn off a few weeks ago not long after the death of her calf.

Chimps have been in and out when I've visited but more than often in I agree - I think they had a poor winter in terms of many of the troup getting colds type of thing and generally not being well. To me they have been unsettled since Cleo died - but it's only my opinion!

I've never noticed Zootierliste listing Chester as holding the grey-winged blackbird (Turdus boulboul) before. Is this a recent addition?

They have never held that species to the best of my knowledge, if they are on Zootierlist then they are a new addition to the zoo.

1.1 blue-crowned Hanging Parrots (Loriculus galgulus) are on show in Realm of the Red Ape.

Chester achieved the UK first breeding of hanging parrots in 1959 when a male blue-crowned and a female Sri Lankan reared two chicks from four hatched.

They habve not bred hanging parrot since. Perhaps they will have better luck witht his pair.

Nice to see a new parrot species on display, breaking the current parrot trend at Chester.

Chester has imported some grey-winged blackbirds (Turdus boulboul) and they will be on show in Islands.

Odd. Isn't it mainly a Himalayan species? As far as i'm aware, it's not found in the Malay Archipelago.

I thought at first it was an Indian species, but the range is the Himalayas from Pakistan to Burma, and then north Thailand, south China and northern vietnam.

A new female Grevy's Zebra (named Flo) has arrived

Comments on Facebook indicate that she's from Edinburgh via West Midlands Safari Park

Presumably then, Chester’s new Grevy’s zebra is “Florence”; born Edinburgh Zoo in 2008, sent to Marwell in 2010, then sent to West Midlands Safari Park in 2013.
