Chester Zoo Chester Zoo updates *3

From Facebook it appears one of the young otters had an encounter with a babirusa that resulted in fatal injuries.

I'll honestly be surprised if this hasn't happened before, when considering how often the otters can be seen to hound the babirusa!

I suppose it's always a risk in mixed exhibits - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Always sad to lose an animal though.

It is indeed. I'm frankly surprised all the coati haven't been gobbled up ;) but they usually seem to be canny enough to climb as high as possible when the bears are about!

They are quite agile but you are right I've seen Sangay the male Spectacled Bear give them 'the look' when they get a bit too close to his stash!

The Red River Hogs and the Mongoose mixture over by the Okapi a while ago didn't quite work either. The problem doesn't seem to be aggressive behaviour as such more a 'get away from my food' and when an animal 10 times your size gives you a nudge you do tend to notice it.

Have the meerkats and aardvarks worked out their relationship?

I've just got back from a quick visit this afternoon and although they weren't hounding the Aardvarks they were running up with threat postures and that warning shout they give if they want to scare something off. The Aardvarks seem quite sanguine about it all just walking off the other way, no repeat today of the bloody snout one of them got last time.

Evil Meerkats.......

It's a visitor comment not an announcement, they'd seen something happen and asked about the otter, the zoo replied.

I reckon the comment must have been removed since, then, as there is no sign of it. Possibly it was gathering problematic comments.

The otters are indeed currently off-show in order to separate them from the babirusa due to at least one fatality.

There is currently no date for the arrival of the new bull from Spain.

Yes 2 of the cows are currently pregnant - roughly due in December & January 2013 from the info at the last members talk.

:D

Do you happen to know which cows are pregnant ? I would imagine Thi and Sithami

That news is on page ten of this thread. Confirmed as pregnant are Sitami and Sundara. https://www.zoochat.com/community/posts/574418
The zoo will annouce which ones are pregnant if and when they have successfull births, just like they do with any other birth of any iconic species within the zoo!
The keepers had no reservations about revealing details of the elephant pregnancies to a whole room full of people just a couple of weeks ago. As far as I can recall, in recent years elephant pregnancies have never been a secret or taken anyone by surprise!

Well if anyone has seen from my thread about Sundara's paternity, then her calf will inbred offspring (and I do not feel like getting into the debate of this, so please do not start) as Upali is actually her father (and I heavily assume that he is the father of her fetus)

Since you feel it necessary to point this out then you are not in the position to tell people they can't start a debate about it, if you don't want a debate you should keep quiet!

The simple answer is that Sundara had been cycling for quite some time and after serious discussion between the relevant people the decision was taken that, not knowing exactly how long before a new bull would be in place, the long term risk to Sundara's health of not becoming pregnant was greater than the risk of problems with this baby.

In that case as OrangePerson has already said what was the point in bring the subject up if you didn't want a debate. As a one off I doubt this will harm too much,I think the bigger problem would have been to let her to continue to cycle without becoming pregnant!!Which is the same view that was taken by people in a far greater know than us on here.

Father - daughter matings are by no means unusual in certain domestic animals (I could certainly find you some examples in cattle). Carries risks, but contrary to popular belief it doesn't necessarily give you offspring which are feeble/ infertile/ or have three heads.

You can all start in the debate between each other if you so well please, I simply meant that I personally don't feeling like getting into the debate for pointing something others may not be aware of out. I can say as I please thank you very much

Just returned from the Zoo. The big news is that the giant otters indoor pool is fenced off and there are notices saying that they may have cubs!
I didn't see or hear the adults in the outdoor section, and when I walked past again at about 4pm a very pretty young lady was leaning on the fencing overlooking the seating area with a clipboard and a walkie-talkie. I asked politely if she was on watch and she said that she had seen the adults from time to time, but had seen no sign of cubs (which is probably as it should be). I wished her luck.
Keep your fingers crossed :)

Alan
