Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2014

Looks like they came through San Diego. Nice to see that the imported group are spreading out. Does Cleveland still have the older lone individual? I remember there being one when I visited in 2011.

The press release mentions that the older female was sent to the Fort Worth Zoo for breeding.

The older one is 55 years old. She was born in the wild in 1958.

Any news on a possible new rhino bull for the next round of breeding introductions (since the last one - Jimma - left for Chicago Brookfield)?

So sad to hear. Blackie was always one of my favorites.
The article mentions Blackie's offspring, does anyone know what happened to them? What zoos they may still be at? ages? Thanks!

Could be wrong but I believe he outlived all of his offspring ! His mate was a female named Red and they had their first of several offspring in 1958.The 2nd hippo was born in 1960 and was named Baby.

There was a male calf born in 1974 but he died before his first birthday. The second calf was Frankie who was born in 1975. He went to Philadelphia for a decade then he was transferred but to where I do not know. While in Philadephia he sired a male calf who was stillborn in 1979. Calf 3 I dont knows name. he was born in 1981 and before the year was out he was sent to Australia. Whether or not Frankie or Calf 3 are alive I dont know but its possible.

The large walk through tree in the Rain forest and the Francois Languar exhibit are both closed for renovations.

In late May, I will make another trip up to Cleveland to attend a concert, and the day after we will visit the zoo for the second time. This time though I will try to acquire a complete species list.
