Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News, 2023

I was there middle march I saw Colobus in first exhibit on left as you entered into main area
The first row of indoor exhibits were for the Guenon, Mangabeys, and Swamp Monkeys, then the nocturnal section and the Gorillas. The only mention of the Colobus I saw were on the outdoor exhibit and that said they were off exhibit

Happy Mother's Day | This Mother’s Day is extra special at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo! Tune in for a surprise announcement to see who’s expecting! Hint: our big boy is going to... | By Cleveland Metroparks Zoo | Facebook
Female Gorilla Kaybe is expecting! Second baby Gorilla in Cleveland. I do wonder if that means some members of the Troop will be moved out before Primate Forest is done. While there's more room for Gorillas since the Baboons and Mandrills moved out, I can imagine PCA is running out of gorilla room

Just left the zoo. Lots of new updates.
The new dining court options are- Tenders Love & Chicken, The Burger Kitchen, Pizza Hut Express
- Harbor Seal no show
- Pathway in front of Bear Hollow has reopened
- Yagga Tree will open first week of June.
- Tropical Bears should be returning in June, with Bear Hollow opening July.
- No word on how many Sloth/Andean Bears will return
- Phase I of Primate Forest will not break ground this year. The employee I spoke to says it will happen in 2024/2025 at the earliest
- No plans to reopen the Homestead

What is currently closed at the zoo, based on their current map? Considering a visit mid-June. The original plan is is African Safari and Cleveland Museum of Natural History, but the safari has a dino thing opening in June (bleh) and Balto is currently off exhibit at the museum, so considering the zoo maybe instead. I originally wasn't considering the zoo because of all the construction.

I know the species list on the website is awful but it's so hard to not look at it

From what I was told on Tuesday, everything that's currently closed (Yagga Tree, Tropical Bears, Food court, and Australian Aviary) should be reopened by early/mid June. Bears might still be closed, but the employee said it depends on the weather and how much it allows for construction.

The only thing staying closed is the Reinberg Homestead in Australian Adventure. There are no plans to reopen it again at the moment

Awesome, thank you! I've already seen both bear species this year (I've seen Andean 3x and I've barely been to any zoos lol) so that's not a big deal, other than wanting to see new exhibits.

I wonder what the thoughts are behind not opening the homestead? Do they not want to put money towards updating it? Possibly doing something else entirely in the long term? I doubt they have the capacity to even plan or think about it too much right now with finishing up the bear hollow and wanting to start the major expansion and renovation of the Rainforest but I'd be curious if there are any thoughts?

From what the employee said there's no plans to remove it at the moment, but that there's no reopening plans either. My guess is in the next 5-10 years both the Yagga Tree and Homestead (as well as possibly the unused theater) will be redeveloped. All three are relics of their time, and they're already about to turn 25. The barn/ walkabout I can see staying alot longer.

I'll be the first to admit I'm blinded by nostalgia, but the Yagga Tree is such a unique experience at the CMZ. It's very Disney-esque in ways (good and bad) and certainly very different from anything else at the zoo. Nothing lasts forever, but I'll be disappointed if they get rid of it for something less inspired.

As for the Homestead, it's very much in the same well-intentioned spirit but has never been much to talk about. Probably too small to be converted into an event space, which would be the only thing I can think of that would preserve the structure. Last I heard, the inaccessible lower level has a lot of space for the staff's needs. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't have lasted so long.

The Yagga Tree is large but pretty tucked away within the area. The Homestead is large, currently obtrusive, and in a prominent location with a large-enough area for something new - exhibit or otherwise. But I'd wager removing the building and redeveloping the space currently requires too much of the type of planning and resources needed for bigger, better things like the Primate Forest. So it'll probably keep . . . existing for now.
