Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Columbus Zoo News - 2014

Okay, I'm trying to catch up on some animals I'm interested in. So clouded leopards left the zoo and were replaced by Amur leopards. Are the Amur leopards still there? Is there still a binturong in the nocturnal house?

This was a little while ago but my last trip there was on July 13th and I saw both. The Amur Leopards were in the indoor exhibit that previously housed the clouded leopards, and we saw a sleeping binturong in the Roadhouse. I wonder if the clouded leopards went to another facility or are just somewhere off exhibit (Hopefully a place with access to the outside):)

Yes on both animals.

In this week's Dublin newspaper an ad for the zoo says Heart of Africa closes for the winter on November 2nd, reopening in Spring 2015.

The Columbus Zoo has deacquisitioned Brush Tailed Bettongs and Prevosts Squirrels and are moving the Brown Kiwi into this former exhibit in the Road House. The current Kiwi enclosure will be reworked to exhibit a new animal. All we know is that its not going to be Tasmanian Devils or Tiger Quolls.Although tassies continue to be in the zoos long term plans.

I received an email that Heart of Africa is closing November 2nd for the season. This what bothers me about the Columbus Zoo. I know it's colder weather, but I've been to other zoos where you can still walk the pathways and there's a slim chance you may see an animal out. Along with this, parts of the Islands are closed off during the winter as well. It's just sort of sad they open up a new exhibit and it will be closed 4-5 months each year.

This is what really sets the 2 San Diego parks apart from many other American zoos. In San Diego you can visit either the zoo or safari park on any day of the year and get the same basic tour. With many other great zoos (Omaha, Bronx, Columbus, Saint Louis and others) it can be a very different experience for several months of the year.

I was thinking about that as I wrote it. San Diego definitely has an advantage of warmer weather year round.
