Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoological Gardens in 2011

The arrival of 2 female giraffe somewhat puzzles me ...

I know the story of companionship for the pure-bred (and proven) bull, yet it begs 2 question:
A) Are the females sterilised since they are both hybrids.
B) What is the future timeline planning for introduction of the on wish list pure-bred females?
This is a move that has been agreeded with the current studbook holder, and has been done so that another collection in the UK,can move out its Hybrid Giraffes so that it can bring in another pure group of Reticulated Giraffes into the UK,the 2 female Hybrids at Dudley will move to another collection as soon as more pure Rothschilds become available for Dudley!

Went to the zoo today and saw all the new arrivals apart from the tiger who must still be too afraid to come out and meet his public.
The giraffes look like they have settled in well, one is a young girl as she's still quiet small. They may be hybred but I cant tell the difference, they look beautiful to me.
The new camels are in their new home too, they dont look fully grown to me either. I like the way their new house has been done as it's got a window to allow views into their sleeping quarters.
I was a bit concerned about the moving of Inca but I have to say she looks very much at home in her new area, and you wouldn't even know it was the old polar bear bit, it's been fitted out very nicely.
Inca's old pit is also being fitted out ready for the baboon's, lots of climbing frames being put it, it looks good already.
Looks like there could be something new going into where the macaques were as new posts are in place, so it looks like the enclosure is being extended.........

It will be the Macaques moving back in once the exhibit has been extended.Which will then give the zoo 2 empty enclosures in the monkey house for 2 species new to Dudley, but seeing as none of the Dudley regulars have mentioned anything about these species arriving I will not say what they are!

You always get all the juicy news!

Will be making my last visit to the zoo this Saturday 21st May before I move (only got computer and camera along with achair and sleeping bag left to pack.
If you would like any photographs or have any questions please feel free to p/m me and I will see what I can do.

The baby Orang-utan 'Sprout' , born to 'Jazz' over 6 weeks ago , is a female and seems to be doing very well with her mother - according to Facebook .

Good to see another collection with a successful Orang birth . The EAZA 'Year of the Ape' is being supported by births in several collections .

This is the 2nd birth to this pair, the first DNS. Hopefully this one will. I hope they give it a more fitting 'official ' name in due course.

From what they've said on the official website and the Facebook page I'm pretty certain 'sprout' will be the permanent name

I've seen zoos give young orangutans 'baby' names before- e.g. 'Zowie' at Blackpool. Later when he grew up they changed his name to 'Homer'.

An adult female called 'sprout'?- not very dignified is it?

This will be my last update for some time.

New arrivals a pair of Llama which are at present in with the Icelandic Sheep (don't know where they came from)
The baboon enclosure (inca's old one) is looking great and is ready for the new arrivals
Work is on going at the Orangutan house as it appears they are adding some more climbing frames (it's a pity they can't knock it down and start again).
African Spurred Tortoises have been moved or taken off show as the 3 male Meerkats that where hand reared last year are now in thier enclosure in the Monkey Tails building, I wonder if this as anything to do with the fact that they used to share an enclosure with the Yellow Mongoose and it's to stop them having to change the animals over.
Noticed that the Red Ruffed Lemur brothers were off show and the information notice for them was missing also.
Didn't see Sprout but you can't have everything in one visit can you.

EDIT - As anyone else noticed on the new website the map says thier is an avairy down by the Chimpanzees just past the Red Squirrels I can confirm this is where the Gaint Rabbits are and thier is no avairy

Does Jazz's mother have any other offspring apart from Jazz and is she related by any chance to the blackpool orangutan clan?

I think Jazz may be related to Blackpool's 3 female relations Vicky the mother of Cherie and Summer,i know that one of Dudley's Orangutans are related to Blackpool's group.
