Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2013

I'm guessing the latter, the older baby seemed attached to the other female (not the one with the new baby)

It's a few years old, but I thought this video of one of the Edinburgh golden cats I recorded in October 2010 and have finally got around to uploading onto Youtube might interest some of you :)

From the blog:

At Edinburgh Zoo we have had some exciting new births in our primates and hoofstock sections, including a Drill, Barbary macaque, pudu calf and a lesser kudu calf.

Thanks for the photos Bongo, this seems to be a huge improvement on the previous incarnation.
Now that the zoo's big 3 have been taken care of (Giant panda, penguin and koala), time now for the rest of the zoo to be looked at, priorities for me would be the Indian rhino, cat dens and the monkey house.

i would agree with you. Think that the Monkey house and Cat dens need to be sorted first, then the Rhino's.

Any sign of the supposed rock wallabies labelled briefly on the map? I note they have been removed again, as have the koalas.

The new female exhibit looks great, shame they couldn't have done a bit more with the two male exhibits. Do they still have outdoor access? When I went last year in August there was no sign that they let them outside anymore.

They do have an outdoor enclosure but they can only go outdoors if it's a certain temperature.

Thanks for the photos Bongo. Hoping to get down there on friday to see it for myself. Didn't they initially advertise this as a walkthrough or were the reports in newspapers just confused (or I'm misremembering!)? I'm not sure what I was expecting from this, but I feel a bit underwhelmed from the pictures. It's all prettier and updated which is of course good and was needed, and the I like the female enclosure (although it makes the boys' look quite spartan and unenriched by comparison), but I'm still a bit sad at the loss of the bird part for what has been done with it overall-I rather liked that quiet spot to watch the birds up close.

On my last visit the majority of the birds had been moved into Brilliant Birds anyhow.

You're quite right, they have (although from speaking to someone in there -a volunteer I guess- they may not all be staying in the zoo) but as I said it was the quiet spot that I will miss and being a bird fan I will always be a bit sad at the loss of bird space, so I guess koala territory needs to be particularly good to win me over!

I like the fact the males seem to have some natural light now - I presume Chris West has had much to do with the improvements - are there still three sections in the male section, and are the Poteroos still there?

Visited today for a few hours, mostly with the intention of seeing the exhibits I'd either missed or rushed last year. I got to have a better look at Budongo and Living Links in particular, and have a first look at the Monkey House (very active Drills and Barbary Macaques, plus my first L'hoest's made it a highlight even if the enclosures weren't brilliant).
We arrived too late in the day to book panda tickets, but one of the Koalas was surprisingly active, and it was nice to see their exhibit greatly improved. This was also my first time properly seeing Edinburgh's penguin pool, and it definitely stood out as another highlight.
I still feel the row of carnivore cages are on the small side (though I did enjoy getting the brilliant views we got of the jaguars and leopards), but generally I can definitely consider Edinburgh to be my favourite second collection in the UK.

I did manage to get to the zoo last friday & see koala territory for myself-its nice, clean, light & well done. All 3 were asleep while we were there. No signage for or sign of any animals other than the koalas in there. One of the males had access to 2 enclosures-I assume they'll be alternating this as before.

Zoo was very busy in general. The only real news I'm not sure I've seen mentioned is there were 2 red river hog babies viewable in the house, looked not very old. There was lots of enrichment around, especially in the monkey house from the summer school which was nice to watch.
