Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

Zoo updates:
- There are Christmas trees in front of the red panda inside area, that’s why the fence was removed. Anyway, the zoo should have put the trees somewhere else and this was a bad choice.
-Birds of Paradise is being renovated, the entire exhibit is now empty-no trees, branches, etc. I heard that they are going to make the pond bigger and have more animals than just birds. Nothing else I heard.
-The zoo got two new rhea. They are in the third and largest yard. The entire old canine section is gone and got transformed into a new South American section. The peccary has access to two yards currently but they are eventually planned to share space.
-I also heard that the zoo may eventually take down the whole pond area and make that a whole new exhibit.
-The terrarium in trail of the Jaguar next to the white-throated woodrat has been filled with another white-throated woodrat. It formerly housed a toad, but I am not sure what happened to it.
-The wildlife lodge has once again been closed due to Covid. The narrow paths make it harder to social distance and I also assume this is in light of the governors new rules. The earliest it could open should be Jan.4.
-Dakota, the mother of the bison herd passed away Dec.4 at 23. The remaining two bison seem to be coping well, the last time they were normally relaxing in their yard and the time before that they were still moving and eating. They were never calling or showing signs of distress.

Closest to giraffes/zebras, where the red fox and wolves used to live. It was never specifically named so I just called it the canine section. The red fox and both wolves have all passed away.
Ah, okay. So, that’s where the rheas are, right?

The sun conures have left the zoo to Mississippi. I heard from a keeper it was not enough space to keep them indoors during the winter. They now live in a big tvery big outdoor aviary where they can stay year-round. When Birds of Paradise completes renovation, 8 scarlet ibises will replace them. They are currently in the giraffe barn surprisingly, in Hannah the zebras old stall. We are not sure if we will get to feed the ibises especially since COVID is still around.
The macaw and Rex the Amazon parrot will return and live with the ibises. The pond will also be expanded and the zoo will get turtles and a sloth.

Interesting! I'm excited for these renovations! Did they specify the turtle species by any chance? And do you know when it will be done?

Does anyone know if the zoo keeps the following species?

Madrean Alligator Lizard
Yarrow's Spiny Lizard
North American Spadefoot
Canyon Tree Frog
North American Green Toad

All of them are/were in Trail of the Jaguar, but I don't recall which the zoo still keeps.

Prissy the boer goat passed away yesterday according to the zoos Facebook. She would have been 15 this spring which is very old for a goat.

A red-footed tortoise named Hank. Hopefully done by I think March, but don’t hold your breath.

Only the first two on the list are still kept.

This is obviously something I'm VERY interested in, but I don't think most are going to be approved for it. Your dog has to have a recent negative heartworm test, a number of vaccines, and a certificate saying the dog has been seen at least once a year. The dog I want to take is 9 years old. Not being wealthy, we don't go to the vet unless there's something wrong, so there are years where he hasn't gone.

Mr. Wilson the Muscovy duck passed away from a gastrointestinal illness. He was well into his teens. The lifespan for wild Muscovy ducks is about 12 years.
