Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

More info on Birds of Paradise. If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you can see three new bird species (in addition to the current resident Yellow-crowned Amazon and Blue-and-yellow Macaw): Scarlet Ibis, Plush-crested Jay, and Sunbittern! The new Red-footed Tortoise is also listed on the reptiles page.

Something else I noticed is their Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, who's a program animal, is listed as "Location: coming soon," so I'm thinking he may also be part of the new exhibit.

Starting next week, the zoo will be closed on mondays and tuesdays. Hours will be 10-4 weds-fri and 10-5 sat-sun. The rope course will only be open on weekends.

-in the Wildlife Lodge, the zoo got new Solomon Island leaf frogs. They are in the exhibit where the milksnake used to live, but they are not signed yet. The milksnake tried to escape, and now he is in the process of moving to another zoo and is currently behind the scenes. When he moves to another zoo he will be an education animal there.
-There is one Panamanian golden frog now in the exhibit where the Borneo eared frogs and red-eyed tree frogs live. They tried to mate, so they had to put one of the girls away from the male.
-I heard the new Harmony Hideaway exhibit is planned to open in a couple weeks.
-in the Wetlands, one of the porcupines died over the summer. It didn’t belong to the zoo but it was on loan for a long-term stay.

Omg! I didn’t even know these existed! They’re like spotted agoutis, so cool. I’m definitely gonna go check them out asap, thank you. (When you said paca I thought you meant pacu as in the fish and I was thinking /where/?!)

Does this mean the Nenes are no longer there though?

The zoo now has three lowland paca, one of my favorite odd animals :) Their names are Peppito, Picante, and Picasso, and they live in the middle exhibit of the boardwalk area, across from the alligators, bobcat, porcupines, and otters.
That's really exciting considering they aren't very common in zoos and I never saw the one at Cohanzick Zoo while it was still there.

Carmen, the male elk, has died. He was 18 and had been at the zoo since 2008. He was one of the zoo's most popular animals. On my last visit a few months ago I spent well over half an hour talking to a docent about him in particular, as he was her favorite.

The zoo has made some changes due to the threat of avian flu.
-The bald and golden eagles have been moved to the exhibit outside the wildlife lodge
-The chickens in the farm area are now in a quarantine space, away from visitors
-For the member preview (and likely the public opening), visitors will not be able to go in to Harmony Hideaway, just the vestibule to see the sloth.
-Encounters with birds are all being stopped.

Are the Rhea, Waterfowl, and Burrowing Owls still on exhibit?
