Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

A few updates
- Big umbrellas have been added to the giraffe yard
- A new bit of road is being put in to connect the old parking lot to the newest lot, and more spaces will be added in the back
- The wildlife lodge (home to the bats, herps, and indoor primates) is being completely redone on the inside. Here's photos of the construction, which is updated weekly: D&S Elite Construction - Elmwood Park Zoo Wildlife Lodge renovation project
- D & S Elite has been doing all of their recent projects, and they have photos up of each one on their website. Here's the new sloth/bird house: EPZ - Sloth/Bird Exhibit Construction

The new rainforest exhibit looks great so far. I can't wait to visit when it opens!

I always liked the rustic wood aesthetic in the Wildlife Lodge building, and I hope they don't do away with it.

I'm eager to go when it's fully open, too. I don't care much about the sloth, they're everywhere these days, but the paca and the BOP will be great to have nearby!

Where did you hear that they’re getting bird-of-paradise? From what I’ve gathered the exhibit is going to be South American-themed.

I visited today and all birds were out except for the chickens in the petting zoo area. Bald and Golden Eagles were in their usual exhibit.

Also, I noticed a bridge has been built over the pond and there are now picnic tables where the old Chacoan Peccary and squirrel monkey exhibits used to be. I think the pond, which once housed capybaras, will become a penguin exhibit but I don't know for sure. It also looks like the old capybara house was being worked on, too.

Could you go in the new building?
Why do you think penguins?

The master plan has something called “splashland” in that area which I think is just supposed to be an aquatic extension of the playground. Like a splash pad thing. Penguins would be cool, but I don’t think the zoo has any plans for penguins.

The zoo does plan to get penguins, but according to the master plan map, the future penguin exhibit will be where the current eagle exhibit is.

@red river hog Interesting! I heard about their plans to add penguins to the zoo a few years ago, but couldn't find anything about it online. It wouldn't surprise me if they did put them in the existing pond exhibit before the new one is built, though I wouldn't count on it.

@TinoPup The bird house was closed, but the signage indicated a member preview was available. The Wildlife Lodge was also still closed and the red-tailed hawk, turkey vulture, and coati were off-exhibit.

There is now a black rat snake in the jaguar building, next to the wood rats.

They are not allowing people into the new aviary due to bird flu, but you can peak through the windows in the lobby. The sloth is in there, as well as the nenes and a lot of scarlet ibis (I didn’t think to count them.) I didn’t see the pacas.

The caracara, turkey vulture, and coati are not on exhibit currently as the eagles are using their enclosures.
