Global Captive Orca Population

Source for this? I've never seen the WSP personally cite anything specifically from Hargrove, nor is he on their team. And while I personally don't support John Hargrove because he has said some racist things, I don't think his claims about captivity can be completely dismissed considering how much experience he has. But I digress; I'm getting off-topic.
If you go their website, there is a sub-heading for their 'focus' whales and they reference Hargove a fair bit for most of the SW orca. In fact, they reference his book, 'Beneath the Surface'. So I don't believe they're directly connected with him, but at the very least they do cite things from him.

Direct Quotes from WSP’s website.
Hargrove says, “I can tell you without a doubt that her spirit was broken” when SeaWorld shipped her children away from her.

If I remember correctly, John stated that he took a break from all internet and moved to a cabin for a few years. This could be why he is not on the team, but instead WSP just quotes him on things. However many members of the Blackfish team are on WSP's team, such as John Jett and, Samantha Berg. I'm not sure how I feel about both of them, however some things they said in Blackfish were for sure, questionable. I listen to Mark Simmons the most, simply because I think his opinions are more neutral, plus he has a ton of experience.

I do agree re. Mark Simmons; he was a lead trainer apart of Keiko's move back to Iceland, and so therefore also has experience in that department as well, of which majority of these other trainers don't.

John Jett and Jeff Ventre have taken the scientific route following their departures from Seaworld too, but like many trainers who have spoken it in Blackfish seem to constantly talk about the past with cetacean care. The arguments that could've had substance back in the 80's and 90's when they were actually occurring, are no longer substantial in the age old debate surrounding orcas in captivity. Times change and standards change, and it seems they (and most other former trainers) remain fixated on the past.

Construction of Zhengzhou Haichang Ocean Park’s killer whale show could be complete as soon as July 2024. So it's likely that Cody and Shawn 2 will be moving some time before this date if construction is completed as planned.

Hello I’ve been here since the first thread but hadn’t been able to post due to not confirming my email I get all my orca news from this and hope to one day finally see an orca irl. I am pro cap but against bad facilities like mundo marino

Hello it’s nice to have you! Interesting note about Mundo Marino: they technically don’t own Kshamenk due to Argentinian law (I believe he’s considered government property) and that prior attempts by them to move him into the US have failed due to the Argentinian government not approving. It’s a sad situation there for sure.

I don’t really like Mundo Marino as they feed Kshamenk ground up fish balls so yeah..even worse than Loro Parque. It’s a shame he didn’t come to the US:(

There were plans to send over to the US over two decades ago (following the death of his initial mate, Belen). Six Flags offered to outright buy him to pair him with Shouka, and Mundo Marino agreed but the Argentinian government refused to have him sent elsewhere. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever see Kshamenk leave Mundo Marino.

It’s strange how SeaWorld were able to import his Sperm but they couldn’t import the actual orca plus if he was to be imported to the US it’s quite unlikely that we would see any calves as when Shouka was with males at seaworld she never bred

Never bred or never conceived?

I wouldn’t be surprised if she simply never conceived. I know Keet did engage in sexual behavior with her when she first arrived at SeaWorld but I’m unsure if she was ever receptive or if this behavior continued.
She did breed, and it seems like she's in a similar boat to Orkid. Not sure what it can be drawn to exactly but obviously something was preventing either from successfully conceiving. Both mated numerous times with proven males.

I think since Orkid is a northern resident she’s probably having issues conceiving as did Kayla and the only exception is Corky but all 7 are dead

I always felt it went back to Orky 2, he sired all 7 of Corky's calves, none of them survived, Orkid has never conceived a calf in spite of several breeding attempts and Kayla gave birth to Halyn in 2005, and although she survived to 2 years old, I don't think she ever truly thrived? I could be wrong though. Kayla also had a miscarriage in 2007. Although Kandu 5, mother of Orkid, also gave birth to a stillborn calf in 1986, sired by Winston and Kenau, mother of Kayla, was the mother of Baby Shamu 2, also sired by Winston, which survived only 11 days. Kenau was also 12 months pregnant with a male calf sired by Kotar when she died so who knows. It would have been interesting to know more about the possible genetic factors though!

That's a very intriguing possibility as even Corky only ever conceived with Orky, and later went 'post reproductive' around the time of his death. The only hybrids we've seen in captivity have been born to resident males and icelandic females, with resident females struggling to conceive.

In saying that, we do have a relatively small sample size so it's difficult to determine, but a lot of people have pointed out a lot of similarities between Orky's surviving female calves and their reproductive success.

Halyn was on the wrong foot from birth, and struggled a lot. She was noted to suffer from an array of physical and mental issues, such as having poor motor skills, something only one other Seaworld calf has had (Nyar).

I thought so, I think she was also born premature which could have contributed. It was interesting that they moved her to the Animal Hospital from Shamu Stadium, I'm guessing the social structure at San Antonio might have been a factor in this too as well as Halyn's health obviously, she did quite well with Keet when they eventually moved her back to Shamu Stadium, but they had also sent Kayla to Orlando too. They seemed to struggle with social structure before they moved Takara over.

Halyn was primarily moved as the animal hospital was a better place to provide her the care that she required. As Kayla rejected Halyn, Halyn didn't have any place with San Antonio's pod at the time, and would've likely spent most, if not all of her time in the med pool (which could have been disruptive for the other whales). Kayla was sent to Orlando to learn mothering skills as a result.

Interestingly, Takara was actually moved over to San Antonio to resolve that issue of them having a lack of pod structure. She was realistically the only candidate at the time for this, and did her job quite well, keeping Ky and Tuar (Ky in particular), in check.

After Haida and Winnie died the whole social structure fell with Kyuquot and Keto being quite dominant males they were in charge and as Kayla didn’t really care she just kept to herself and Keet
