The zoo remains open until 8:30pm on Fridays this summer.

On all other nights, it remains open until 7pm. I am really glad to see some Texas zoos starting to do summer nights like we do here in Arizona. The other two out there I know of are Dallas Zoo (Saturday nights) and Abilene Zoo (Thursday nights I think).

Thanks to the flamingo exhibits redesign the zoo has welcomed its first flamingo chicks. There are 8 chicks, 6 from the zoo and two who came as eggs from Altanta. 4 chicks are being hand reared.

The zoo is starting to ready preparations for the birth of Shanti's calf due in January.

Houston Zoo seems to have transferred its group of rhinos (1.2) to White Oak. The group will be split with the male Sibindi in with some White Oak females and the females Lynne and Annie Kamariah in with the White Oak breeding male. The original group of whites at Houston was imported in December 2010.

I would - but that is speculation 100% - think that it is fair to expect new rhinos will return into the current exhibit.

The six chimps, Toby, Kenya, Tanzee, Kira, Chaos and Sierra, who were surrendered to the zoo by a couple will go on exhibit Tuesday morning which happens to be Sierra's birthday. They will begin intergrated into the present troop once they are settled in to their new exhibit. The zoo is now home to 16 chimps.

Yay! I was wondering what had happened with these apes, I hadn't head anything since the original story that they would be coming. I'm also excited to hear they are younger animals! They should be great playmates for Charlie!

I have not seen a bachelor herd of rhinos. Would be interesting to see how they get along.

A turtle rehabilitated at the zoo is back again. It was released in May after losing a flipper and now is back with a dislocated shoulder. Another turtle rescued has a broken shell.
