Indonesian wildlife trade

Dozens of protected species from West Papua was discovered aboard a Indonesian Navy LCT (Landing Craft Tank) ship, KRI Teluk Lada. The animals were discovered during a ship inspection and were sent to BKSDA by the Navy. These species are planned to be released back into the wild.

They didn't specified in the page about what species that were smuggled aboard the ship, but if we go with the pictures provided, the species were sulphur-crested cockatoos, paradisaea birds, unknown green colored parrots (Could be fig parrots or male eclectus parrots), black-capped lories, three grizzled tree-kangaroos, an common spotted cuscus, and possibly an mountain cuscus.

After a socialization by West Sumatra's BKSDA, a former Wali Nagari(1) of Siguntur, Aswat, gave his pet siamang to the BKSDA, whom he kept for five years. Aswat admit that he doesn't know that siamang are a protected species. He received the female siamang from a friend.

The siamang is temporarily entrusted to be taken care for by Taman Satwa Kandi, a zoo in West Sumatra.

(1) Wali Nagari is a political positions in the local politic of West Sumatra similar to that of a mayor, who are the head of Nagaris, which are basicly small towns in West Sumatra.

Over 363 birds were confiscated by the authority in Banyuwangi. Among those birds, 16 were protected species, such as the greater green leafbirds, Malayan black magpies, blue-winged leafbirds, and crimson sunbirds, the latter two were wild caught from the Alas Purwo National Park according to the authority.

The suspect was a financiers and wildlife traders, although he was in the business for just four months. The birds has been sent to BKSDA.

Another rather unique news.

BKSDA thwarted the transport of packages containing 19 caucasus beetles in the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which doesn't have live animals export license and instead documented as snacks.

The beetles were each stored in small plastic jars used to store red pepper flakes, they were destined to Germany. BKSDA planned to release the beetles into the wild.

I have an idea:
TSI and Jatim Park zoos (and also Bali Zoo) should take care of (and sometimes display) smuggled animals like Singapore Zoo instead of local zoos that we don't know their tracks and there might be a 50/50 chance of the animals being mistreated. We can trust TSI and Jatim Park zoos more than those local zoos excluding Bali Zoo.

It does happen, which is how we got the liger in Taman Safari Bogor and the long-nosed echidna in Batu Secret Zoo. Because the animals were found near the zoo's proximity, so it makes sense that BKSDA would entrusted them to these zoos.

It would be a waste of time and effort to move confiscated animals outside the proximity of Cisarua, Prigen, or Batu. It cut a lot of budget and time to entrusted them to a nearby zoo, for example if the animals were found in Semarang then it would obviously be entrusted to Semarang Zoo or if it was found in Bukittinggi then it would be entrusted to Bukit Kinantan Zoo and so on.

These entrusted animals are often monitored by BKSDA and will eventually be released back into the wild. Although my trust on BKSDA are recently rather low because of their ties with influencers and their awful treatment of their Sumatran elephants.

To get animals that were confiscated outside of their proximity, large zoos like Taman Safari or Batu Secret Zoo need to communicate to the BKSDA of those provinces to get those animals. Example for this is how Batu Secret Zoo got their mountain anoas and marbled cats.

Worth noting that the animals that were confiscated by the authority and BKSDA are most of the time ready to be rehabilitated and returned back into the wild, so there's really no need of sending them to zoos.

I'd love Taman Burung or Jakarta Bird Park to acquire the confiscated hooded pitohui. It's a very rare bird and yet literally the only venomous one.

The authority thwarted the smuggling of 26 protected animals in South Sulawesi. The owner and smuggler of the animals has not been found.

The condition of the animals were poor, with some even stored in sacks. The animals were two sulphur-crested cockatoos, two palm cockatoos, ten black-capped lories, two hooded butcherbirds, three pitohuis, and five unspecified cuscus. BKSDA planned to release these animals back to West Papua.

I feel like the issue of wildlife trade in Indonesia is something that need to be updated more. Wildlife keeping is something that are very popular in Indonesia and somewhat have a impact towards the popularity and even management of zoos, especially newer mini zoos. While some animals are bred in captive farms to be kept as pets or zoo animals (Despite different keepers having broadly different maintenance, good or bad for the animals), so many have been taken off from their homes in the wild to be shipped away, often for a thousand miles, away to be kept in someone's possession. This holder can either be a capable conservational facilities intendes to breed and research these often threatened animals, but almost most of the time this animals ended up in the hand of private collectors, ranging from professional keepers to even families or kids buying them for amusements. This is a issue that are relevant to be talked about when talking about how Indonesia deal with wildlifes as captive animals.

Over 143 reptiles of different species are rescued from a smuggling attempt in an airport in Merauke, West Papua. The reptiles are found in bags that aren't given any identification. This attempt was discovered after a suspicion from the airport's staff coming from the unusual sound and movement coming from the bags.

The confiscated species include;
  • 14 varanus panoptes horni
  • 90 chlamydosaurus kingii
  • 2 morelia spilota harrisoni
