Monterey Bay Aquarium Major deep sea animal exhibit coming to MBA

I'll be going to see the new exhibit later this week, so I'll make sure to take down a species list and lots of photos for upload as well.

New animal in the exhibit courtesy of Master_Gecko117 from the MBA Discord, Abyssal Comb Jellies (Beroe Abyssicola). It looks like the Aquarium already made some rotations so the animals I posted could be behind the scenes now, I'm curious what animal they replaced

Update: They told said it's in the tank that the Red Paper Lantern Jelly was in. So it looks like Pandea Rubra isn't on display anymore for the time being, although these Beroe Abyssicola are pretty cool

This is still on going research but yes, there is this wildy awesome looking Bloody Belly Comb Jelly they've nicknamed the "Amber Lampo" behind the scenes right now. As well as the Purple one on display right now, which I'll send a picture of. There's research going on to see if these are just different varieties, or if they're actually new species.

I believe that is a different species than the one he is referring to.

It is. The article is discussing a new Atolla species, not a comb jelly.

Here's an interesting fact: Lantern Fish were an idea during the plans for the Exhibit as a way to display Bioluminesce but it sounds like they're pretty difficult to catch and keep, especially with how many they'd need to display to show an impressive display. And it sounds like Flashlight Fish also would be more impressive than Lantern Fish in terms of displaying Bioluminesce.

Also I'm not sure if this was ever posted, but here's some things from Paul Clarkson:

•They've worked with Sea Pigs a bit before but due to their depth and food source, they're pretty challenging so no Sea Pigs for now. Maybe in the future if they can overcome those challenges

•Callorhinchus group (The Ghost / Elephant Sharks) is the group they're focused on right now. This could mean they'll have another Callorhinchus species on display sometime, and / or in the future there will be another big Predator in the Whale Falls Tank roaming around

However, the wording of it to me doesn't imply there will be other Callorhinchus on display, seems to imply to me more that they may have other chimaera species in the future. As for what that may be, Spotted Ratfish is probably the most likely candidate, but I have my fingers crossed for something like Silver Chimaera (apparently, some Japanese aquariums have kept Silver Chimaeras before).

A species from the Rhinochimaera family would also be amazing to see on display, they're one of my personal favorites

New Update: While the Abyssal Comb Jellies took the Circular Kreisel the Red Paper Lantern Jelly was in, it seems like more Red Paper Lantern Jellies were moved into the Snow Globe Jelly Tank and the Snow Globe Jellies aren't on display for the time being. I'm not sure why. Here's a post that shows the Paper Lantern Jellies in the new tank
