Memphis Zoo Memphis Zoo News

Thanks for the tour. Do you have any other Memphis Zoo tours planned? I'd be interested in seeing their China complex and their African megafauna complex.
Yes I do! I gave the slightest nod towards what will be featured in this video. China and the Teton Trek are the only ones I have filmed now. With videos on a 4 month rotation, I'll definitely visit again. I wanted to film Cat Country but I'd be crazy to ask for ALL of the cats to be out. Could've easily filmed the African Veldt, but right now I'm looking to present zoos in a positive light and there's no possible way I could do that with the Veldt.

Did someone say master plan? SPECULATION TIME!

I think a south american section would be a good choice for the zoo's next big project, my idea being it would replace the former hippo yard (and the attached aviaries), the herpetarium, and the penguin and pelican exhibits.

As for African Veldt and the Elephant exhibit, the zoo's master plan should do either of the two suggestions:
  1. Expand their exhibit right down to the gravel lot.
  2. Phase them out entirely, due to their old age. Either bringing the roundhouse hoofstock to their exhibit or bring black rhinos in to replace them.
Alternatively, the zoo can turn the gravel lot in your standard wallaby/kangaroo walthrough.

The new CEO wants to work on a new master plan. The first link shows photos from a presentation, a slide from which lists areas he wants to work on, including the elephant exhibit.

New Memphis Zoo CEO hopes to re-establish Zoo as No. 1 in U.S.

New CEO details plans for Memphis Zoo
The new CEO is quoted in both articles as saying he can guarantee it will become the best zoo in the country (though not the biggest). Really? Best in the country? Better than San Diego, Omaha, Bronx, Seattle, etc? I presume he is trying to hype up the city council (whom he was addressing), but this claim seems over the top. (For the record I like Memphis Zoo and enjoyed my time there). Also both articles put the entire sentence with this claim in direct quotes but word them slightly differently. So either one of them doesn't understand what direct quotes mean or he spoke to each journalist separately and reworded his statement.

I just looked at the Cat Country page on the zoo website. I don't know when it happened, but they no longer have any small cats and have filled those exhibits with "prey species." When I visited years ago, in addition to all seven big cats (which they still have), they had serval, caracal, ocelot. Those have now been replaced with meerkat, capybara, red panda. As a cat fanatic I find this hugely disappointing and leaving me little reason to return to Memphis. (If they still have small cats but moved to a different area please let me know).

As of a few months ago, I recall seeing Ocelots and Caracals still in that area.

They still do have ocelots, caracals and fishing cats.

Cat Country currently still has both prey species and small cats in exhibits. Both Ocelots are very old and have started staying off-exhibit, so there are typically 2 Fishing Cat exhibits. Capybara and Crested Screamer across from Jags are the only prey species.
