Some other sad news, it seems that guest at the zoo have been really distruptive this year. Talking with some zoo ambassords, they’ve been having real problems with guest pounding on the glass and scaring the animals. It’s the reason why the red pandas are blocked off. Someone pounded so much that the they won’t come out anymore. However it looks like Dash is starting to make a return out. Apparently they also had to send everyone available to the ARC one day this year cause so many people were disturbing the animals.

I wonder if new boundaries and barriers are coming next :-(
 
Good for Zahra! She is joining one of the best and most skilled zoo's at gorilla surrogacy, not to say others in the country aren't just as good. She's got the best future possible in Columbus.

Now Milwaukee can turn its focus back to creating a stable family for Sulaiman and mom Shalia who have had their own huge upheaval loosing Cassius, Naku and Zahra as part of their world. Rebuilding or transfers for them will focus on Sulaiman's journey toward future bachelorhood. Developing brotherly bonds with boys near his own age will be key. Luckily there are a number of other young boys around his age throughout the US.

Other single boys about his age (4 years either way) to the best of my knowledge are...
Denny - San Diego Zoo
Moke - National Zoo
Densi - Jacksonville Zoo
Zachary - Brookfield Zoo
Azazi - Zoo New England
Kayin - Buffalo Zoo
Leom - Oklahoma City Zoo
Abaju - Philadephia Zoo
Ubuntu - Knoxville Zoo
Gus - Forth Worth Zoo
Tracy James - Gladys Porter Zoo

Any of them could move to Milwaukee with their mothers and possibly father or be joined by a new silverback. Or Shalia and Sulaiman could be send to them for integration with their troop. A part of that decision though given Sulaiman's age will depend on where best to place Shalia for her next offspring. Who is the right match for the extremely valuable Shalia. She's got wild born parents.

It will be interesting to see what comes next for Shalia and Sulaiman.

Could also be better for Zahra to be accepted into a new full family group instead of going through the throws of establishing a new family group. Sulaiman will probably be better of for it too. The SSP will probably look for a other females with young sons who can form a bond with him before they reach maturity when formulating the new group. Or Shalia and Sulaiman will be moved out together to join the right group too and new gorillas be brought in to replace the whole group. Who knows.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but adult male tiger Strannik passed away earlier this month. He was 14 and suffered from a stroke.
 
Updates from my visit today:

  • Gorillas still aren't on exhibit.
  • Due to renovations beginning, both the Mandrills and the Siamangs are off-exhibit.
  • Cleverly, the zoo used this opportunity to give the other primates construction cones to play with.
  • Progress has been made with the new outdoor primate exhibit.
  • American Mink is no longer signed at Macaque Island. Anyone know what happened to it.
  • Despite going to Milwaukee Zoo all my life, I only learned today that there is an outdoor area for the spider monkeys.
  • Speaking of this, where is the outdoor Bonobo area?
  • It was hard to tell, but it looked like one of the Tawny Frogmouths might be on a nest.
  • The Spangled Cotingas are no longer exhibit? What happened to them?
  • Saw the keepers feeding the chevrotains.
  • Laysan Teal chicks have hatched!
  • At least one Bearded Barbet is now in free-flight area of the aviary.
  • This is also where the Blue-Faced Honeyeaters are.
  • There was no sign for Hammerkop. Again, anyone know where it is?
  • For the first time in 7 years, a Hadada Ibis chick has hatched.
  • A Domestic Cow calf (don't remember the breed) was born in March.
  • The Domestic Cat is no longer on exhibit or signed.
  • The African Spurred Tortoises are now in the South American yard. Couldn't see any of the South American tortoises, though they were still signed.
  • Saw Otter Passage. The underwater viewing is nice, but I wish the land viewing was better.
  • The exhibit that formerly contained Roti Island Snake-Necked Turtles and Green Crested Basilisk is now dark and empty.
  • The Ornate Flying Snakes were off exhibit and a sign in the enclosure said: "This exhibit is currently under construction". I hope that doesn't mean the snakes are going. That's one of my favorite species.
  • A Madagascar Tree Boa now lives with the Green Tree Python and Rainbow Boa.
  • A Panther Chameleon can now be found in the Madagascar Exhibit in the AARC.
  • Construction continues on Adventure Africa.

I had a very similar situation a few years ago. The outdoor area is so out of the way that I never realized there was one until I saw a youtube video showing it. The outdoor bonobo area can be viewed from the Apes of Africa deck, which likely wasn't open because of the gorillas.

Some news I forgot:
  • No more Moon Jellies on exhibit.
  • No more Giant Pacific Octopus either. It has been replaced by some kelp forest fish (not sure which species).
  • There is now a baby Three-Banded Armadillo in the SMH. It is being hand-raised due to parental neglect.

No but I have some photos of the primate house renovations, some news signs up about Adventure Africa. I also have pictures of the Primates of the World renovations, the new Eyelash Viper exhibit, and some of the new animals.
