Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre Monkey World news

Two chimpanzees (1.1) from Buenos Aires EcoParque have arrived at Monkey World.

Mother and son pair Sasha (F, 24) and Kangoo (M, 15) were originally housed at the old Buenos Aires Zoo, until they were transferred to the EcoParque in 2016 when the zoo was closed. Buenos Aires EcoParque has decided to concentrate on native Argentinian animals, so a new home had to be found for the pair. Sasha and Kangoo are currently in the process of being introduced to Bryan's group, which consists of dominant male Bryan (M, 19), as well as other chimpanzees Ash (F, 17), Lulu (F, 28), Naree (F, 26), and Rodders (M, 17).

Further information can be found in this article.

Fantastic for that small group and nice to see it being expanded. After Sally’s death it sort of looked like that group might just simply dissipate into nothing but the addition of Naree and now these two with Bryan as Alpha male means it’s really becoming the fourth group for the park.

It does seem odd to call them the Nursery group when even the youngest is 7 now.

Are they concerned about possible matings occurring, especially between different subspecies?

I realise they are at the young end of the spectrum but maybe this is why he has been moved on, as only Chester could have taken him in the UK, without someone setting up a new exhibit.

If Chester took him wouldn't he need to be separated from Puluh? Or does Chester have two Sumatran exhibits? If they did, it would have probably been a good place for Silvestre.
Edit: just realised he is related to all the females at Chester, so maybe not

It'd be nice if Monkey World made a Sumatran enclosure, Bulu Mata & Rieke could stay there.
Think it's been explained before the cost would be prohibitive for them. But yes there should be more than one holder in the UK. I didn't realise it had gotten to that point until recently.

In theory they could receive new young European orangutans who are not being cared for by their mother's, unlike the previous Chimp nursery which is now called Bryan's group because there is no intention to have babies in it again (although never say never)

Monkey World stopped breeding orangutans because of problems housing them when they grow up so it is extremely unlikely (cost and space aside) that they would start a Sumatran group because presumably the EEP will intend those (ex) babies to be in a breeding situation.

Apologies if this has been covered before, what happened to the orangutan Hsiao-quai? I can't see her listed on the website and am catching up on the current series.

Not much to report in the latest series. There is a new second Slow Loris enclosure which seems to be located near the Capuchin Lodge.

She passed away in 2017. The following is from a website, not published by MW so I'm not sure how reliable:

'Hsiao-Quai contracted a urinary tract infection and her health deteriorated and she refused to take fluids. In July, it was decided that Hsiao-Quai should be operated on. However, just before the vet John Lewis could start the operation, Hsiao-Quai went into heart failure and despite attempts to resuscitate her, Hsiao-Quai passed away on the operating table.'

I saw the adoption page when they were down to 6. Their names were listed, it didn’t include Sam and Charley. Next time I looked it just said 5 with no names. I’ve seen a photo of Toto since then so it’s not him

The park recently posted an update on the Macaques to Facebook. Sadly they’re down to just three - Toto and Freddie, alongside Sylvie - the last survivor from the lab rescues.

It is being reported in various Facebook groups that Sammy, one of the original chimps has died. Sammy (Bachelor group) was a favourite with visitors because he very much liked to interact with the public.

It is being reported in Facebook groups that Toprish, a young chimpanzee who came from, I think, Turkey has died. She was in Bart's group and was a favourite of his.

Very sad if true, she was only young and has been there just over four years. Another surgery complication? Hopefully these rumours are unfounded.

edit: seems confirmed. Found a Facebook post stating an adopter received a newsletter detailing her death. Reportedly a pulmonary embolism.

According to posts in the Twycross thread a new orangutan has been spotted in the nursery and a Twycross keeper. Disclaimer: possible Zoochat rumour!

I would not have posted ‘rumour’ about an animal’s death.

Ah apologies, didn’t mean offence. Simply the phrasing ‘it is being reported in facebook groups’ doesn’t exactly scream ‘confirmed information’. It sounds more like ‘it is being rumoured’
