Movie review rant 2019

Meh, pretty kinda boring trailer. Good to see they took the time to fit themselves out in all new matching suits though, that's gotta be important strategy-wise. I guess.

I just don't like that Brie Larson though.

I thought it was ok, tbh. The story felt underdeveloped and too "quick" despite the film's two-hour run-time. I don't fully understand the villains plan or reasoning and we didn't get too much of them outside of the action scenes. I also don't really understand the point of the resurrection monster. Was it just a distraction? I also didn't like Hellboy just suddenly switched to agreeing to end the world and then switched back to a good guy in like two minutes tops.
Maybe I can be of help, given that I'm a fan of the Hellboy graphic novels: Guillermo del Toro used several bits of various Hellboy stories to create a story that differs from the original - which explains some of the inconsistencies. Rasputain is a major agent of the main villains, the Ogdru Jahad, which are a bunch of very nasty evil beings that were created by a rebellious angel. The angel was ripped apart by his fellow angels and all that was left was the very hand that got stuck on Baby Hellboy in a ritual. Due to this and other reasons (Hellboy's dad was a mighty bigshot in Hell, Hellboy's human mum was a descendent of King Arthur etc.), Hellboy is a key figure for several prophecies and supernatural forces. Therefore, he's constantly baited by one force or another to fulfill this or that prophecy. Maybe the scene wanted to convey this constant temptation he has to face. And yes, the Hellhound was meant to be a distraction.
As for the "animorpher" in the new movie: that's Benjamin Daimio, a (former) colleague of Hellboy who was cursed to transform into a demonic were-jaguar.

Neither do I; but the homonymous cheese can be good, especially when used to create a good obatzda. ;)

Forget Endgame, Shazam etc. - the true cinematic highlight of 2019 sports a different, way more original name (which gives away the plot) - and Sam Elliott.

I think Marvel waited until I was on vacation to release this because they knew I would only have a phone to watch it on :eek:

YouTube's not working properly atm so I'll let you know what I think when I can actually see it.

I thought you were being uncharacteristically quiet. I was debating sending you the link when it came out but thought, nah, he's bound to have seen it as well... ;):p

I enjoyed the trailer. I can see why some might find it a bit boring, nothing much happens in it and there's no big WOW moment. Obviously that's intended to keep things secret I'm sure but it'd be nice if they gave up something more. Only about a month to go though so.

Honestly, to me, most of the trailer looks like a fan-made one rather than a real trailer.

Captain Marvel

I watched this today and was pleasantly surprised. It's a solid movie, and one I feel happy to have watched at the cinema. As is well known on here I wasn't looking forward to this film at all. But it is an MCU movie and my daughter was showing a lot more interest in this than any other superhero movie so far, so my hands were tied.

The film is much better than the majority of origin stories, mainly because it starts off with a fully powered hero. Great start. And the film doesn't really let up either, the breaks in the action are frequent but entertaining, and most of the action scenes are really well put together.

The CGI de-ageing on Samuel L Jackson is really well done, but not so convincing when it comes to Clark Gregg. It's not terrible but not the best. And the third act battle scene CGI is far better than Black Panther's final act but isn't anywhere comparable to anything in Infinity War.

And then we come to the actors and characters. SLJ as Fury is as perfect as always, Jude Law is (amazingly, as I do not like Jude Law) quite convincing in his role, Brie Larson is really good, much better than the trailers made her out to be(!), and Anette Benning is there as well. But my favourite performance came from Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, he had some of the films best lines.

Finally, and more personally, this was my daughter's first MCU film at the cinema and also her first live action film as well, (she's still 5) and she watched the whole film, no issues. I had prepped her with Spider Verse but I was expecting her to want to leave half way through, so it also gets plus points for holding her attention as well.

8.5/10

But what would you have done if she had wanted to leave halfway through? Told her to just shut up and watch it? Let her leave while you finished the movie? Taken away her beer?

I'd have (grudgingly) left the cinema, but fortunately that never happened. As I said, the film really appealed to her, probably because of the female lead. Still not taking her to see Endgame though, no little girl needs to see her daddy crying because Iron Man or Captain America died! ;)

John Wick 3 trailer!!

I loved the first movie, and while I liked the second movie very much I do feel like they painted themselves into a bit of a corner by making it clear that 90% of the world's population are members of this assassin group. And now they've gone and given John Wick a sidekick. And even worse, it's Halle Berry. Just why?

Still going to go see it though.
Second trailer just released:

The movie we've all been waiting for!!! (*insert intense sarcasm*)

And if that poster doesn't make you want to see this movie, just know that Danny Trejo is voicing Boots.
