Not a fan of the new name, it will always be Marwell Zoo to me anyway in the same way that Durrell will always be Jersey Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade will always be Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.

First instinct was why change?
The Bronx zoo went to the wildlife conservation park and now back to zoo, Whipsnade went to wild animal park, and now back to zoo.
What is the point of spending so much money on a rebranding when the public at large will always want to visit Marwell zoo:confused:

i think that the gemsbok will be included in the first species to be introduced to the valley, i would also think that the roan and sable antilope, aswell as the hartmans mountain zebra will move in soon after its opening. do people think that the scimitar horned oryx will be inroduced to the valley, or mabey move into aridlands? I do hope that the rhinos and the Giraffe move into the african vally, it would make an impresive sight seeing the rhinos grazeing amoung the roaming heards of antelope and zebra, and the giraffes towering above them all. i also hope that the kudu and the nyala are introduced to the valley. Do you think that the sitatunga will be introduced to the valley?

I still have this lingering hope that at some point Marwell Zoo will go back to maintaining black rhinos over white rhinos. More in tune with the work in Zimbabwe (Dambari Trust) and also more evocative.

Went here today. lovely day sun was out all day and grass felt dry yet all the hoofstock apart from the Rhinos and Wild horses where on their hardstandings bet of a shame as its always nice to see them on the grass. in the old Babriusa pig paddock was a single Anoa making the total of 3 does any1 know where this one came from. Got a great photo of a Congo Buffalo she put here head through the fence and you could nearly touch her which of course i did not will but some pics on here

Had a Email from Marwell yesterday showing the new logo and name not sure if i really like it. a green hand print with a white oryx head looks like a child has designed it not keen on the name it will always be marwell zoo to me . still love the place tho and will always carry on being a member

I personally like the logo, but I stay true to my disagreement on the name. The marketing director I met last week only joined three months ago from Mars, and she clearly doesn't know how to brand a zoo.

^ Careful. Lol

I got the email yesterday too and Im actually quite liking the new logo. The name, I'm undecided on about whether it will catch on. But I think its a nice name and I think it will be good for the zoo to get a fresher feel. Can't wait to go tomorrow and see this new sign under construction.

Wow! That's a first, Marwell could be the first zoo to put a Martian on display :D

Alike the regular posters on Marwell ZOO (lol) I have some reservations with this new naming contest. I find it somewhat superficial to re-brand it Marwell Wildlife as an rather obsolete attempt by media savvy anti zoo sentiment inspired attempt to project Marwell ZOO as anything other but a great zoo.

To my mind, what this marketing director SHOULD be doing is to get in the punters and provide educational opportunities to the general public to become educated about the fauna and flora of Marwell ZOO, its captive-breeding and in situ conservation activities as well as the importance of biotopes, biomes, ecosystems and the value of their conservation.

But, I suppose, if you just crumbled from under a rock outta the Stone Age ... you must first digress a few stages before you realise that as a marketing director ...!!?

Jersey zoo did the same- rebranding themselves as 'Durrell'(or is it Durrell Wildlife?) but I don't think anyone refers to it as anything but 'Jersey Zoo' or 'Jersey' even now. I guess the same will apply to 'Marwell'

'Paignton Zoo Environmental Park' doesn't exactly trip off the tongue, which is why everyone I know calls it 'the zoo'. The local road signs used to (and maybe still do) point to 'Zoological Gardens' with the standard picture of an elephant. Apparently someone once turned up and asked if they had animals there.

All these places that rename themselves are trying to get away from that dreaded word 'Zoo' which by inference means an Edwardian menagerie with bored and restless animals pacing in tiny barred cages.

Environmental Park, Zoological Park, 'Wildlife' Insitute,- anything but the word 'Zoo'- yet I think its futile to try and escape the truth- Zoo haters will go on hating them, Zoo lovers will go on visiting them....

I know we are heading off topic here but interesting that Whipsnade have gone the other way from "wild animal park" back to "zoo".
