Greater One Horned Rhino
Duh. Thanks lol.
I guess only the future has answers on what will happen at the Phoenix zoo.
Greater One Horned Rhino
Thank you for letting me know! I genuinely had no idea. I believe I made a positive comment about her somewhere recently in this thread but that was out of total ignorance of the full situation, so I would definitely like to apologize for that...she got fired over TB mismanagement as well abusing the volunteers and staff. TWRA was not happy with her management. Her current board consists of her being CEO, president etc. so she’s in total control. I don’t think that’s ethical.
zoo and circus people are also not happy with her.
Many elephant advocates despise her also.
A lot of photos and videos of her are just props.
I just wonder what would happen to the elephants when Carol gets sick or dies? She’s approximately 67 years old.
Carol used to be married to Bucky Steele in Texas by the way. Tarra was bred to Buke for that stillborn calf.
He's so cute! I’m so happy for Fort Worth, finally another baby after 8 years! Anyways, I would post this in the Fort Worth thread and not here as it’s just a minor update.Brazos has had his first swimming lesson

Vance did test positive for TB and I think some other Ringling females have tested positiveDo you know which elephants at Ringling have tested positive?
Is Carol like the "Carole Baskin" of the elephant handler community? Like that kind of reputation?such sad news knowing carols reputation.
Yep its the Carole BaskinIs Carol like the "Carole Baskin" of the elephant handler community? Like that kind of reputation?

I think Baby had TB but am not 100% certainnot that it really matters now do you remember which females? It has been so long.
I want to say Cora was one of them. I remember talking about that particular elephant with someone (not here) years ago and she mentioned Cora having TB. And she’s a reliable source.
Cora was born at Portland. Elephants had TB at Portland. So would Cora be possible carrier to the elephants at Ringling? Or it came from India with many people and poor health care system so TB is rampant there.
I would think so, though there maybe some updatesI was just thinking.... are the AZA standards for elephant care from 2012 still considered up-to-date?

I have nothing of value I can add to these conversations but I just wanted to say thank you to all of you. Your knowledge of Asian and African elephants is astounding and this has been an absolutely fascinating thing to read. From my own obsessions I know how much time and research you put into this stuff and I respect the work you have done and I know will continue to do. Because elephants can be a hot button topic I'm sure they can be trickier to get the goods on. Just thought you all deserved a compliment and thank you for a stimulating pair of threads. That's all. I look forward to the next posts from everyone.
Well as stated by @Animals R AMAZING! and @csartie they could be refraining from announcing the pregnancies to make it a very much needed surpriseIm still learning everyday with the North American Asian and African elephant population in North America. For instance I had no idea about the current situation with African Elephants and how hardly none of them are breeding and what a disaster it’s been. There’s currently only 2 African elephants that are pregnant and both are at Omaha. The Asian Elephant population in North America has now gotten a lot better. Granite we’re still not out of the woods but this year there’s been 4 elephant calves born in the Untied States (one of them born to a first time mom!). And we have another calf due next year to Asha and I keep hearing Rose Tu at the Oregon Zoo is pregnant (truly hoping the father isn’t Sampson). But see I didn’t even know there were certain elephants that we DIDNT want breeding until these threads. I didn’t know about the severity of EEHV until this threads. You learn stuff everyday is all I’m saying and I agree they deserve a pat on the back or something.
Already back to more questions but I read recently that Rudy and Sunny at Columbus have both been showing signs that they are pregnant. I think @Mr.Ivory was the one that said it but I could very well be wrong. I thought Columbus didn’t want to breed them as I heard that from another zoochat user on another thread (which is absolutely ridiculous if that’s true they aren’t gonna breed them because Rudy and Sunny have never had a calf and the window is closing for them to be mothers).

Phoebe has had five calves with four still alive. The ones that are still alive are George at African Lion Safari, Bohdi at the Denver Zoo, Beco at the Columbus Zoo, and Frankie at Columbus. Ellie who was born in 2018 has passed away.but why would they do that? Well I guess they could’ve waited until we know they’re in their final months of gestation like they did with Phoebe when she had her fourth calf (I think it’s her fourth. I only know of 3 other she’s had besides Frankie). And maybe they wanted Rudy and Sunny to get pregnant a year later after Phoebe prospectively because they’ve never had calves before and maybe the zoo thought they needed to observe from an experienced mother first before having calves of their own. One of them (can’t remember if it’s Rudy or Sunny) we’re showing strong motherly behaviors towards Frankie. If they are pregnant now I imagine they would be due in either 2022 or 2023. I truly hope Asha isn’t the only known Asian Elephant due in 2022. We need more calves and we need more of them breeding.
There are multiple instances of zoos waiting till the end of there females pregnancies a perfect example would be Houston, and that could be a very good reason to why there waitng to have both Sunny and Rudy bred so they can see proper mothering behavior, Sunny is basically glued to Frankie, and Rudy redirects him back to Phoebe. Phoebe has actually had five other calves before Frankie, a stillborn female born in 1993 with the sire her own father Motek, George born in 1999 with the sire Calvin, Bodhi born in 2004 with the sire Coco, Beco born in 2009 with the sire Coco, and Ellie her second daughter born in 2018 with the sire Hank.but why would they do that? Zoos lie. They're nontransparent when they feel they need to be. I've had a friend ask if an animal was pregnant and she was confidently told "no, but we hope she will be some day!" while she was at that very moment in holding awaiting the very near birth of her first calf. Some zoos don't want pregnancies revealed at all until the offspring are on the ground and have had some time to stabilize (see: Fort Worth for a recent and relevant example). It's one way to avoid bad press although I've typically seen with zoos that practice transparency, the public tends to be very sympathetic and understanding of losses.but why would they do that?
