Perth Zoo Open Plains Zoo for Perth???

It would be a fine thing if a lot more of the posts on this forum were as well considered and articulate as Glyn's.

Sorry, I've just had the misfortune to have read the homosexual animals thread. And we used to be such a quiet, friendly little group on here. Never any arguments ;)
 
its not worth paying any attention too, and is no longer open.

On a WA note, i find the idea of an open range zoo in WA intruging, mainly because of how scared CALM are of exotic species, so once we give the animals large natural enclosures they might adapt to the WA landscape and become feral.
I think thats a possible reason why it wont be approved, there is always someone above a Minister and if CALM say no i dont belive it will go any further
 
Before we blame glyn for all the problems due to global warming (i dont want to discuss that either) lets try and stay on track
 
hilarious. yes the daily commute from maitland to taronga is a bit of a drag, but its so worthwile.....by the way, the next big thing im off to is kevin rudds bright ideas forum where im going to suggest an open range zoo for western australia. :)

I have a good idea for somewhere that could be a great place for a zoo as a sister facility to Perth and it could be open range if you want. How about near Monkey Mia halfway up western australia where all the tourists go because you can swim with the dolphins.
 
Isn't Monkey Mia too far away from Perth, or am I wrong? Look at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and its location...and that is the number one reason why they only get 200,000 visitors per year. That Dubbo site has puny numbers, and it is a stretch to get tourists to visit.
 
Personally Pat, I don't care where the open range zoo is situated, just as long as we get those larger animals out and into open areas like they should be. Who wants to get depressed watching large animals in small enclosures? This is why as the public become better educated, they are wanting better conditions for animals. I have been reading quite a bit on the web about how zoos send bears and other animals insane due to what some people accept as reasonable conditions.
 
@Jaywa: I hear you loud and clear. Zoochosis is one term, although there are many others, that is common and attributable in captive animals such as elephants and bears. You bring up some excellent points about the public, as many westernized nations simply are no longer impressed in substandard exhibits and tiny enclosures. One of the problems is getting across such concerns to horrid zoos in Japan, China, Thailand, etc.
 
It is pretty far but alot and alot of people go up there for the dolphins and because it's so far they have to stay the night and go back to perth the next day. So people are gonna spend two days their at the least. And Australia does need a few more zoos in high profile places so that they can hold excess stock and still get enough visitors.
 
Do you know Snowleopard? After what I have read on the net - I don't know that I like zoos at all. In fact, the majority make me sick. You speak of China - feeding live injured animals to big cats with their public watching and enjoying - egypt with their method of feeding the overworked donkeys as bait - it all makes me sick to the stomach.
 
Must admit I haven't been to Perth Zoo.

Are their enclosures for white rhino, elephants etc. really all that restrictive and horrendous? I'd like an unbiased opinion (i.e. by someone other than Jaywa, thanks.) ;)
