Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2025

Thing is, given your general track record when it comes to criticism of the collection and the direction it has gone in recent years, if they *had* waited until there was something substantial to share, you would have probably criticised them for waiting too long to provide some form of communication and suggested that hearing something/anything would have been better than nothing :D
Yes, I take that on board, fully, and see how it looks. On reflection, I’ve been very positive and supportive of the changes and progress made since Dennis Flynn departed, both on this forum and, most importantly, face to face, at the coal face with the staff on the ground on a regular basis. Hand on heart Dave, I honestly don’t think I would have criticised them for not releasing an update of this nature, because their members updates have been so regular (including meeting invites for members) and thorough, since Stephen Kings took over as interim.
I’ve criticised the actual piece sent to members by the curator, as I think it reflects the reactive and slow approach to change of that department.

If you were on the inside looking out, your opinion would be different.

Are you saying it was better under Flynn, or that the curatorship is really proactive & performing well?
I'm saying that under current circumstances and situations you wouldn't be aware of, I think they're doing a good job.

Wild Planet Trust today added a profile picture of a Giraffe - I believe it is ZSL London - with no comment. Could this be a ‘tease’ that a move/transfer is taking place?
I also read some excellent briefs from Wild Planet Trust about their brilliant and important work at Slapton Ley and with the Torbay Seagrass beds (my daughters have both participated in activities related to this project).

Probably just someone who hasn’t been up to their own giraffe house and think it looks like that ;)

Bit of a reach here... The trust is sharing a post (not added a profile picture) from JZAR that talks about a giraffe welfare study. As a Trust that's so respected in terms of it's research output, it's not a shock for them to be sharing other zoo/animal based research.

Torbay Seagrass beds (my daughters have both participated in activities related to this project).

I was part of this team until recently - glad to hear they've taken part in activities surrounding the seagrass.

Apologies, it didn’t show as a ‘share’ on my feed - must be my settings?
The organised beach cleans have also been a hit with my girls, which inspired them both to help the Torbay & Countryside Trust to do some cleans down at Hopes Nose as it was in a real bad state last summer.

The seagrass initiative has been going on for years (used to be run by NMA and Living Coasts) and it was Herbert Whitley who purchased Slapton Ley as a real conservationist.

The two young red-necked wallabies will be joining the zoo’s existing group of marsupials, bringing the total number to an impressive ten.
