Planckendael Planckendael animal park, Mechelen, Belgium.

sorry- I meant outside of Africa...

regarding DNA tests, they would probably show if Amohoro and Victoria are from different populations?

Do not worry, you are cool! I personally know of 2 locations where both graueri and berengei are kept together.

Regarding their status in Antwerpen. Personally, just exhibitting a rarer taxon/taxa of a given species is no help if the sex ratios are not designed for some form of breeding. A showcase for their wild counterparts ... perhaps .. but that also sits uneasy with me. To be frank: I do not quite know what to make of the Antwerpen gorilla group.

Nor me either. Its just a collection of three animals as a zoo exhibit. They should have been able to breed the Estern Lowlands more successfully in the past though as they had two pairs from the 1960's. I think there were several (unsuccessful) births to both the females Quivu and Pega, but only Victoria survived. (All were fathered by the male Kisubi as the other male Kaisi didn't breed.) The 1960's apehouse wasn't very suitable for breeding as it was very small...

Sure enough it was environment wise more than anything. But if I am right there were additional breedings ..., I will check IZY sometime (but later rather than sooner ... holidays!).

Can anyone provide the following information about this zoo, Dierenpark Planckendael:

1) Number of Species =
2) Number of Animals =
3) Annual Attendance =

@Pertinax
The breeding of eastern lowland gorillas was indeed very unsuccessful. But not only "Victoria" srvived, she is the zoos first, another female gorilla survived in the 70s, but already passed away.

Thank you, Gie.
Basic question: Is there anyplace where they just estimate the total animal population at Planckendael? (not number of Species, but number of animals)

there's been a snow leopard born in Planckendael.

the mother took good care of it, but unfortunately she died.
as this cub is very important tot the EEP, the zoo is handrearing it.

the cubs father was imported from the US and represents an unrelated bloodline, hence the importance.

Jasiri (*2002 Apenheul) died, Djanao is seriously ill. A premature dead baby was found, it was either from Jasiri or Djanao...

At the end of the year, the five female Asian elephants of the Antwerp Zoo, will move to Planckendael. (If the new enclosure is ready, off course)

Indian rhino Zutuma died

Sad news, Indian rhino Zutuma died at the age of 40 (!). She was the oldest Indian rhino in Europa. She gave birth to four babys, her first daughter was stillborn, her second daughter is Johanna, who still lives at Planckendael. Her first son died after 4 days, her second son is Nico at Terra Natura Benidorm.
RIP, Sweetheart!
