Friends of the forum, I wanted to ask you a question: can the animals that are downloaded from nexus mods share habitat with those that already exist in the game?

Until now I haven't downloaded any and that was my doubt

As far as I know, all mod animals are based on a base game (or dlc) animal and share the base animal's enrichment and mixed exhibit preferences. That said, all non-carnivores can happily share in the game, except hippos and rhinos, I think.

Yes, they can. They're no different than the official roster in that regard. Many of the newer mods have tailored enrichment and interspecies enrichment as well. Some also have interspecies enrichment with other modded species as well.

Out of curiosity, how many people here play with mods? More specifically modded animals? I mainly ask because a lot of the animals I see on people's wish lists are available as mods.

Granted, most of the birds and fish/cetaceans are pretty wonky with no in game animations for modders to properly utilize (so I get not necessarily wanting to use those), but even those are now improving with modders having figured out how to add in custom animations.

From what I know, you no longer have to fear mods ruining a save file if they do break (which is rare now a days in and of itself) and I've never had an issue other than one exhibit animal mod causing the game to crash when I'd tried to place it (never lost any game data though) and that one has since been fixed. Most people I see online complaining that mods don't work just don't install them properly.

The other complaint I typically see is that they don't work in franchise mode, but that is only true for the habitat animals. Exhibit animals, props, and gameplay changes (like freebuild) all work in franchise mode and can further expand that form of gameplay. With the exhibit animal mods alone I can add 113 extra species to the game for franchise mode. In addition to this, there are prop animal mods available that adds another 50+ species that look more realistic than the animals in the workshop made using in-game scenery. So (as long as they all still work since I last used them), you could potentially add 160+ species to franchise mode.

The animal mods expand the game exponentially for me, but admittedly I do not really get the insistence on playing in franchise mode many people have. I have a Microsoft Access Database I use to track all the mods available/that I have downloaded and between mods and the in-game species now available, there are around 1,300 potential species/subspecies you could use in your zoos (this number isn't going to be fully accurate as some of that includes older mods that may no longer work, but you get my point).

For example, of the 63 species in the wish list KaelElson05 posted, 50 of those species have mods available. Of the 13 animals that haven't been created as a mod, many of them have at least a comparable animal available as mod that is at the very least better than not having that type of animal available in game at all. For example, no Black Spider Monkey mod, but there is a Yucatan Spider Monkey.

We are never going to get every animal we want in game (the list of packs I reference above would mean at least another 2 years of DLCs would need to come out, which seems unlikely) and I see so many people that could get what they want by using mods, but don't see much discussion of it on here. Is most people's hesitation with it that they fear it will break the game? Or the fact that they can't use the habitat species in franchise mode? Or is it something else?

I do for one - I don't know how many I have currently but it's a bit more than doubling the roster.

Yeah important to note that anything non-ACSE does not work, which is some 1.10 and then older. Anything 1.12 to 1.10 has some issues (namely floating on water) but can be used with caution - I'd recommend checking for bug reports on anything marked 1.12, 1.11, and 1.10. Generally the older it is, the more cautious you want to be, and don't use anything older than 1.10 or that is non-ACSE!

Is most people's hesitation with it that they fear it will break the game? Or the fact that they can't use the habitat species in franchise mode? Or is it something else?

Breaking the game is part of the concern, which in all fairness it can be annoying to troubleshoot which mod is causing it. I've never lost a save file though. Personally I tolerate having to do a bit of troubleshooting occasionally for a much more expensive roster. I know a lot of people are waiting til official support ends just in case updates break mods again (which hasn't happened for several updates now), at which point there's no cause for concern.
The inability to use habitat species in franchise mode has some part to play for a few people, but it typically doesn't seem to be a major part. I agree with you that I don't understand the insistence on franchise mode, I've tried it a few times and it annoys me more than anything.
