Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Port Lympne black rhino

Does anybody know which rhino was living in the Baboon Enclosure and does anybody know which rhinos are in which paddocks together at the park ??.

Thanks

GB

There are currently 17 black rhinos here at Port Lympne, read on for a short bio on the rest of the park’s herd!

Arusha: One of the older females born at the park, Arusha was born in 1983. She is a large rhino that loves a good scratch from her keepers - and she’s also learned how to work her expression to get extra treats from them!

Damara: Born to Vuyu at Port Lympne, Damara is currently sharing a paddock with the female Solio. While she can be a little highly strung, her temperament has become calmer recently. Like Vuyu, she has a large and muscular build.

Grumeti: Born to Etna in 2007, and sired by Mwaniki (who sadly died in late 2005). Very gentle by nature, but sometimes a little shy, Grumeti will readily lie down for a scratch from the keepers. More recently, Grumeti also decided that safari landrovers make great scratching posts! Paired with Zawadi, they are quite a mischievous duo.

Kingo: A sire to many of our herd’s calves, he was born at the zoo in 1983. He is very amiable and loves company, sunbathing, attention and a good wallow! Ever-curious about what the keepers are doing, he loves a good hose-down in the summer.

Nakuru: A female born at Port Lympne in 1987 to Rukwa. Temperamental by nature, she can quickly switch between friendly affection and cantankerous grumpiness. Preferring the solo life, she doesn’t get on too well with other rhinos – even including her mother Rukwa!

Nkosi: Born in 2011 to Ruaha, his name means ‘king’. This adorable infant is very friendly and loves extra attention. His personality is in stark contrast to that of Ruaha, which is unusual as rhino infants quite often take after their mothers’ temperament.

Nyasa: Born at the park in 2003. She was also born at the park. She is currently in with the male Zambezi. They make a compatible couple so we’re hoping to see some calves very soon.

Rosie: This feisty female arrived from another UK zoo in 2011. She took a little while to settle in and was quite grumpy and badly behaved at first. However, she has since calmed down and seems very happy in her new surroundings.

Ruaha : Since her birth in 1996 at Port Lympne, Ruaha has already given birth to 2 calves, both male. Her most recent birth was Nkosi, born in February 2011. Indifferent to the keeper’s attention, Ruaha is very independent and doesn’t seek attention. However she is very food oriented – which could explain why she is one of our heaviest rhinos!

Rukwa: A wild-caught animal born in around 1970, Rukwa is the oldest black rhino in Europe. Since arriving at the park at the age of 3, she has had 8 calves and is now in breeding retirement. She has a very calm and relaxed nature and enjoys a scratch from the keepers.

Solio: A female born to Rukwa in 2001. She is small but chubby and has short horns. She can be quite playful and friendly but doesn’t seek out too much attention. She usually takes a back seat with the other rhinos and takes the world in her stride - she is now with Damara.

Zambezi: This young male was born at the park in 2002. He spent many years out on the African Experience before being moved back into the main park for breeding. He is an independent, confident and very attractive rhino, and seems very taken with his partner Nyasa!

Zawadi: Born in Berlin in 2007, she arrived at Port Lympne in spring 2010 and spent her first summer on the African Experience with Grumeti. Friendly by nature, she is quite large for her age and has very big ears.

This is from the Howletts and Port Lympne Website.

It will be interesting to see if they can do anything with 'Rosie' breeding-wise (if that is the intention). She is rather old to start breeding now but her parents are not very well represented so if they can succeed where Chester failed, it would be good news. The large paddocks and 'hands-off' management style at PL may well suit her better though I am still rather dubious of success with this oddly-behaved rhino. Naturally I'd be delighted if they do succeed.

If she is introduced to a male then it's got to be Kingo?

I guess, as he is currently their only mature bull, and their only proven one now? I notice there is a male listed born in 2002 (Zambezi), so now nine years old, which they are bringing on for breeding too. These seem to be their only two older males currently.

Did Quinto father any calves here before he died?

Kingo (m) born 2nd October 1983.
Zambezi II (m) born 20th December 2002 at PL to Nakuru and Addo.

Thank for the list. So the only two grown-up bulls they currenly have are the two above, plus Manyara currently on loan(?) at Paignton. I think only Kingo is a proven regular breeder at this stage, though the Paignton female may already be pregnant to Manyara. Plus of course the male at Howletts(name?) who is now proven too.

Interesting the 2nd male 'Zambesi 2'(above) has as his maternal grandfather, the male 'Bwana Mkubwa' from ZSL, who is also 'Rosie's father.

There are no calves listed as fathered by Quinto, though I suppose just possibly there could still be a pregnancy from him(I can't remember how long ago he died there)

Does anybody know if Etna is still at Port lympne because i looked on the port lympn website at the black rhino herd and Etna's name wasn't on there??

According to the studbook 2011 Etna went over the rainbow bridge on 20th Dec 2011

Port Lympne's Rhino facility always strikes me. 'Rukwa' the oldest female at PL has had plenty of calves, three are still at PL. What happened to Howlett's female being pregnant? Somebody stated (Pertinax?) that she wasn't actually pregnant, the keepers were wrong.

Did female black rhino girl "Mala" from Magdeburg, born 12 Dec 2011, arrive safely? How is she doing?

Sorry to re-start an old thread - But male, Nkosi (b2011 to female, Ruaha) is listed in this thread as having been sired by Kingo. However I have information to suggest that it was Quinto who sired him. Has anyone got access to a recent studbook to confirm this?

Just been talking to a keeper at Port Lympne. Thought it might be of interest to update the rhino thread with what he told me:

Port Lympne bull Manyara is still on loan to Paignton zoo, bull Magadi2 is at Chester I believe there is a calf of his as well there. Further afield Port Lympne's bull Vungu is at Rotterdam, PL bull Baringo 2 at duvr Kralove plus a couple of calves, (he may be at Berlin now though the keeper was not too sure). Then there's a cow Bashira at Ree park Denmark plus her bull calf Mandela.

Port Lympne still have Sammy from Chester born in Osaka Japan at the moment as well as their breeding bull Kingo.

Port Lympnes 4yr old bull Nkosi and a 4yr old female Mala who came from Magdeburg and is now at Lympne and are due to go to Folly Farm along with I think the none breeding cow from Chester Manyara. They were supposed to have gone this month but Folly Farm are not ready yet. He thought that Flamingoland were told (by the studbook keeper?), if they're ready before Folly Farm they could have them. Flamingoland were due to get Indian Rhino but have made the decision to go for Black Rhino instead?

All interesting stuff, obviously it is information from one source and there might be errors.

As Quinto died, it seems there are currently only three proven black Rhino bulls in UK currently- Kingo and Sammy, both at PL, and Magadi2 at Chester.

Chester currently have three of Magadi's offspring (the 4th is Bashira, mentioned already)

If Flamingo Land want Black Rhino then there's enough surplus youngsters for them to have there own stock without having Mala and Nkosi

I guess that this decision (Folly Farm or Flamingoland), will ultimately lie with the Studbook keeper at Chester. If he says they go elsewhere then they'll go. I'm intrigued to see what will happen!! Zoo politics - never straightforward.

As Quinto died, it seems there are currently only three proven black Rhino bulls in UK currently- Kingo and Sammy, both at PL, and Magadi2 at Chester.

There's actually four thinking about it again - Kifaru at Chester (imported from Hannover in 2014) is previously proven (sired three calves) but hasn't bred in a number of years
