Chester Zoo Pregnant Rhino

Chester folk- is Manyara currently in with Kitani and the calf (at least outdoors) or is she separated in the Tsavo building?

They are seperate but can see and smell each other, this is why I don't see why there is such a big problem with trying to breed from her? They have paddock's away from Kitani to attempt this.

I'm glad you say she is reproductively healthy- though something was definately mentioned indicating there was a problem.

She did have a condition, but have forgetton what it was called but it was more of a highlighting to the public so they didn't get asked about it all the time (she could be seen bleeding from the mouth(i think) sometimes).

it was an abcess in her mouth

Just remebered myself it was a PolyP

A polyp is an abnormal growth of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane. If it is attached to the surface by a narrow elongated stalk it is said to be pedunculated. If no stalk is present it is said to be sessile. Polyps are commonly found in the colon, stomach, nose, sinus(es), urinary bladder and uterus. They may also occur elsewhere in the body where mucous membranes exist like the cervix[1] and small intestine.

well, as long as she hasn't got any in her reproductive tract, it should be okay. It would be interesting to know exactly how they stand with breeding from her now- the sooner the better as she's unbred from so far and of course, the longer that goes on, the less chance there is. She is also the only offspring of Esther at Chester(and that bit rhymes...;))

Sammy and Manyara are being put back into together according to Michaela's animal road trip.

I gather this is also why she was moved off-show for easier management of introductions, as the first didn't go down to well.

Will the 2 calves from this year have been allocated a zoo to move to, if required.
Or is it too early yet for that to happen.
Just wondered how quickly such a proposal or requirement is put into place, i guess from the minute the pregnancy is confirmed.

Probably too early just now to say when they will move, thou I suspect Asani will be the only one to leave (that's if they have room for another female).

Chester have room for 8 adults, with Chester currently having 9 animals (including calf's).

Well, Asani and Bashira would be able to breed with each other...

If they kept the female calf Bashira they would breed her with whichever of the adult bulls isn't her father (Sammy?) as that male is totally unrelated. So they have no need to keep the male calf longterm.

It is standard policy to breed all individual rhinos off-show. Introductions and separations are done as management and Head Keeper/Curator see fit.

So, Manyara now (and has been on-going) and Malindi at a later stage ...

Bashira's Father is Magadi.

So if Manyara doesn't breed with Sammi, they'll try Magadi with her, right?

They havn't been. Manyara was in the on-show enclosure while attempting breeding. Also Kitani was on-show when she became pregnant.

Which is just what he WILL DO!

I KNOW HE WILL, I was not suggesting for minute he would not do his best for the overall captive population. I was pointing out to our young friend (Haz_cat) that the decision is not always down to the collection which is sometimes forgotten by are enthusiastic friends.

As Chester have two(unrelated) males, they can keep breeding with the existing 'closed' group for many years to come now without any need to send animals outside- there is only Port Lympne in the UK with other bulls anyway.

The main exception to this may be 'Rosie'- socially a problem animal.
