Chester Zoo Pregnant Rhino

Were you in the Tsavo house just after opening time today? I spent half an hour there taking photos (downloading now ;)).
They can't do any introductions at the moment. There is a digger in the paddock and a 2 metre cubic hole in the corner near the meerkat sculpture. There is water bubbling up from underground and an obvious problem with the drains.

Yeah that would of been me, I usually pop in first thing while its quite. Kitani looked a little restless today.

Yes she was restless. The little guy followed her devotedly until she stood still to let him suckle. The he let off some steam.

Not a wonderful shot but I just used the ambient lighting, so conditions were very difficult for photography. I have put three more in the Gallery.

Gosh he has really bulked out since my last visit, still stunning though :)

You can even see the start of his horn. I was amased when I was there sat, i think he has doubled in size since my last visit.

Pertinax mentioned they are very fast growers early on in life.

We saw the youngster on 29th for the first time. He was curled up in the bedding when we arrived, but got up to suckle a little later on. He's a real sweetie.. and I'm sure he'll grow into his ears eventually!

According to the Zoo Magazine, Quinto has left and been replaced by a new female rhino called Malindi. Why haven't they got a male to try and breed with Rosie?

There is talk of trying AI with her, as she has a sort fuse and fights with males.

Yep i heard they were thinking of AI with Rosie personnaly think its the only way they will ever get a calf from her as shes never taken to any male thats been put before her.

I also believe this may be the case, however I do wonder how her personality will deal with a baby.

Moving Quinto was a good move, freed a bit more space for chester

Am I right in thinking that Rosie was hand reared ?

Rosie (Bwana Mkubwa x Mama Kidogo) was premature and underweight when she was born at ZSL, and though Mama had raised several calves previously at Whipsnade, Rosie was handreared. I think her parents were then sent to Port Lympne and so she had no contact with other rhinos till the arrival of Jos. I feel this lack of early socilisation has affected her permanently and is responsible for her negative behaviour toward males.

I believe she is also very temperamental (even for a black rhino) as her indoor stall at Chester used to be a sort of screened off 'boma' so she couldn't see the public. Nowadays I guess she's in a house where the public can't go?

I'm sure AI is the only possible method to get her pregnant now and that might prove extremely difficult. She could still surprise everyone as far as mothering ability goes as Handraised animals which can't get along with others of their species will often still possess good maternal instinct.

Did it say where this new female has come from?

See the other new posts on this thread for information on 'Rosie'

Malindi has come from Magdeburg Zoo in Germany

good. Chester are really getting it together with their Black Rhinos now. Maybe they'll cut their losses with Rosie and send her to Port Lympne too. They have plenty of room there and might even manage breeding with her, I don't know. :(

Yes she's in Tsavo 2 which is off show to the public, you can see her from a distance if she is out in her paddock though. Does anyone know where the new rhino is (I'm guessing also in Tsavo 2) and what the plans are for her? i.e. who will they try and breed her with?
