Chester Zoo Pregnant Rhino

Went to the zoo today. Kitani gave birth last night. Tsavo is currently closed to allow mother and baby to settle. We spoke to a keeper (carnivores) who told us they were doing OK but they didn't know the sex yet.

Brilliant news!

I was going down on Sunday to see if anything had developed, I guess I will have to peek through the glass now;)

Fantastic news! First baby for 10 years, how exciting. I for one will be looking to visit as soon as the little one is on show. Heres hoping all goes well with mother and baby!

great news, we know how all you Chester zoo fans love your black rhino, well done.

Hope all goes well in these first days... and this birth makes 'Quinto' at Port Lympne a first time grandfather too.:)

I would like to congratulate all the staff on the rhino section and curatorial management at Chester for all their hard work put in over the last few years to create the conditions that have promoted their breeding.

I must get out there later in the year or possibly when the next calf is due in 2009!

I can't wait to see the new calf, shame that they will prob be still off show at the weekend :(

Some shots I took of the new calf on Saturday. Apologies for the poor quality, my 2 and a half year old camera seems to be on its last legs and I didn't want to use the flash around the calf...

Rhino calves grow amazingly fast. You can see the body outline of the calf in the heat photo shows he's already bigger & bulkier than at birth.

The little rhino is so cute, especially when (s)he runs!
I spent a good half hour watching him last weekend.
Got a few photos (not as many as i'd like as i dont like using flash when photographing animals / children, and its quite dark in the indoor enclosure)

He has now got a name, but it is not going to be released till sometime next week. No doubt to whip some media up about the calf to draw more visitors in.

Also other news, they are testing Manyara to see when she comes into season for introducing her to sammy.

Wasn't there some problem preventing her being able to breed? Have they resolved this or was it only hearsay?

Not sure, but I thought it was strange that considering the used to live together that they didn't try putting them together again untill she fell pregnant as this was a new why for them to try and it was successful with Kitani.
