South Lakes Wild Animal Park Safari Zoo 2016

For those who have not read the comments of the zoo licence team, attached are images of those points made.

Just out of interest, regarding the issue with the Macaws, how can free flying Macaws survive without being fed? They can't survive as wild or feral birds in the UK so they must be going somewhere regularly to be fed and someone must be providing food for them. Is that within the Zoo, or outside? Wherever it is, surely responsibility for them can be traced.
 
The macaws were fed by the Zoo but flew a;; around Barrow, Dalton and surrounding areas. They were a well known feature and as with the African Grey's I have no idea what happened to them. I would think if someone were to ask where a lot of the animals / birds went to, they wouldnt be able to account for them. The African Greys were in a flight cage.

Have the Macaws now disappeared? Since the Inspection when attention was drawn to them? Its possible(even probable) they've been captured and are now held offshow somewhere.
 
I think this Quote is a reference to David Armitage isn't it :-) from what i'm told, if anyone has a chance to rescue this place, its him.

Please stop pulling quotes from Facebook that are not direct quotes from the zoo itself.
 
Hmmmm i also did a very famous quote from "the man in the arena" Theodore Roosevelt 1910... but being new here.... not too sure now.... I didnt see any problem on the other deleted post .... was I missing something? for future reference... I will have to be careful perhaps ????

I thought this was a very interesting point on the report. Trying to read between the lines it looks like management couldn't justify why the birds were not accountable, and went with the 'private collection' line. Suspect the inspectors were not fooled by the ruse, but unless they can prove the parrots are fed on site (and thus part of the zoo collection) they are cannot act on the blatent disregard of the law. But yes where are macaws going to find food in the middle of a UK winter? Amazing that they haven't been nicked.

I think the matter was not because of the opening sentence about "the zoo doing well", it was because the bulk of the quote was just Gill bitching about Zoochat. Who cares? Everyone knows Gill hates Zoochat, but this is a news thread - if people want to read what he thinks about that then they can go to Facebook. See the discussion thread for what else I have said on why we keep a tight rein on South Lakes threads.

Went to the zoo this weekend, maintenance team were working all over the park on walkways, shelters etc - I think it's worth noting that a lot of the NEW exhibits seem to be a lot better equipped than old ones (with the exceptions of the indoor bear area which looks tiny!) When I volunteered there a year or two ago some keepers did comment Gill has focused so much of his attention on the extension that the "old" bits of the park were left to neglect - so it's good to see that they will now be fixed. One thing that puzzled me though, at present in his new 'Africa' Section he has Zebra, Camel, Wildebeest and Nyala - he has also said the Rhino, Giraffe and Baboon will be going there - does anyone know where he intends to keep the African Elephants that are 'coming soon'? Surely they can't all be in the same enclosure?!

Good to hear that work is in progress however, making new is not the same as fixing the problems highlighted within various council zoo licence meetings and that from the zoo licence inspection team. The mixing of species has been mentioned within the inspection report and it still seems that Gill and company are still ignoring the advice and report. Also, Gill, his management and staff are not qualified let alone experienced to work with elephant, even lacking the correct enclosure and housing. Even though they are not BIAZA bodied, it will be highly unlikely for the local council to even approve of such happening, if that is the zoo is still operational and the licence is or has been renewed and Gill has nothing whatsoever to do with the park. It is worth noting that the zoo has not as of yet become a charity.

It is worth reading the reports of the meetings held on 23rd, 24th February and 2/4th March, 2016

72 plus pages on each report held on these meetings, but is is worth reading and noting how severe the rebuking has come to. The zoo has been allowed to remain open, but must correct all the problems and shall be inspected again in June 2016, with the same inspection team as before. There has also been comments made in regards to the elephant house and other extensions which are not kept within the planning application and are sited in the wrong places, these buildings will be a matter of a planning order to remove. Despite the stance from David Gill and the Management, time and time again, the inspection and reports rip apart those stances.
Pages 5 to 7 of one report ( 23rd, 24th February 2016) "bench marking" lays it bare as to dispel the nonsense that Dave Gill ranted on about how he is being chased and persecuted by the local council, as the report shows that is not the case. Pages 8 to 72 again dispels and rubbishes Dave Gills comments and gives its thoughts and reasons. Furthermore, the Appendix of the report shows various licences from other zoos as examples to dispel David Gill's nonsense. From failing to give animals the correct diet to the wrong enclosures and housing, from poor to bad record keeping and husbandry to that of the highest death count in any UK zoo along with the highest number of animal escapes.
The March 2016 report is again damming against the zoo and owner, it is shocking that David Gill has got away with so much for so long and it good to see the local council acting on areas that were previously raised and are currently being raised.
I and others were lambasted by various people about my and our comments about Dave Gill and the South Lake conditions, yet here we are with the council showing and backing up areas that I and others mentioned. The old adage goes; "Don't shoot the messenger" in this case there has been far too many people believing the nonsense from Gill and his "team", far too many blinded by dross from a fantasist and far too much worshiping of a man who loves his own self and hearing his own voice. Let me make this point; I am not against South Lakes, but what I am against is David Gill and those like him, I am against dysfunctional zoos and animal collections, I am against going in with animals such as big cats and carnivores to that of bad practices that serve only the ego. So, if I have offended anyone, then I say sorry. However, I shall not apologise for Gill and those like him.

unfortunately the link you have provided does not seem to work have accessed directly at barrow bc licencing committee
i do not have a great understanding of how zoo,s should operate/comply with statutory requirements but it would seem reading through this document that the zoo is still refuting the inspectors report and he(gill) still does not acknowledge any wrong doing.
i particularly like the comment he makes around the inadequate fencing in one of the new houses (use of hay bales and pallets) which was not completed owing to the council
luring the fabricator away from the zoo by paying him a higher hourly rate
once again it would appear it is every ones fault but his
it is nice to see that the local council appears to be doing a thorough piece of work this time and is not giving way to outside pressure
just another observation but i cant see gill attending this meeting as if i am correct i think he is before Manchester Crown court on these days to enter pleas around the case involving the unfortunate death of the keeper killed in the tiger compound
