San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

The gharials are all between 3 to 5 years old. I understand they are too young to sex. The zoo's agreement says we will keep all 10 for a year and then they can be shipped to other zoos.

Yeah...hopefully including Busch Gardens as well as Zoo Miami (if the zoo has gharials).

The new Reptile Walk looks quite attractive. Seems their giant tortoise yards have now been subdivided. How is the reassembling all giant tortoises into their respective species' groupings coming along.
(this since the SDZ Galapagos giant tortoise group has now been completely mapped with the latest technology from Yale)

How is the radiated tortoise exhibit rating?

It will be interesting to see how this compares to the much more anticipated and time consuming to build exhibit up in LA.

I posted pictures of the Reptile Walk exhibit signs in the gallery. Sorry some of them are blurry. That's what happens when you take pictures with your iphone while keeping your eye on a 2 year old. :)

According to the SZ's Facebook page, Zookeepers have detected a panda baby (specifically a heartbeat, leg and spine) for Bai Yun. Fingers crossed she gives birth!

Well this is not as exciting as a panda birth, but it is news.

The zoo magazine, ZooNooz, is now available in a digital format for ipads. According to the actual (printed) ZooNooz, all you have to do is "go to the App Store and search for San Diego Zoo ZOONOOZ."

(As someone who does not own an idpad or kindle or any other similar device, or even a cell phone or television, it means nothing to me but I assume some of you will find this useful).

Panda cub was born today!!!!

This is good news. 'Bai Yun' arrived in 1996 and has had six cubs including this new one. Every single cub born apart from 'Hua Mei' is the offspring of 'Bao 'Bao'. Bao Bao arrived about nine years ago and is a wild caught specimen, I expect that 'Yun Zi' will be moved back to China in the next year or two unless he already has.

General San Diego Zoo

I wish I could see all the beautiful animals. I've never been in San Diego and I suppose the climate is much more warmer than in Germany. I feel enthusiatic about these many zoos,it is super.

Really interesting especially wild caught are not so easy for reproduction.
