Singapore Night Safari Singapore Night Safari News

Happy to hear about Berani again, hopefully he's doing fine.

Checking on those 11 species, here's all the species that I know of so far.

1. Barn Owl
2. Leopard Cat
3. Sunda Pangolin
4. Sunda Slow Loris
5. Lesser Mousedeer
6. Spotted Giant Flying Squirrel
7. Small-Toothed Palm Civet
8. Common Palm Civet
9. Asian Small-clawed Otter
10. Binturong

Looks like we've got one fella to look out for, I'm genuinely super excited for this

And I think I speak for everyone when I say this but:

Another possible candidate for the 11th species might be the Sunda Scops Owl. There are plenty of them at Night Safari due to breeding success. They could be mixed with Pangolins, Lesser Mousedeer and Flying Squirrel, but probably not if the Slow Loris shares the same exhibit.

Honestly not that bad of a choice. Though speaking of animals with breeding success or abundance, are there any of potential candidates?

Say like a Malay Fish Owl?

The Malay Fish Owls are breeding well too, but they are probably not suitable to mix with small mammals. The other native species that are breeding well are the Small-toothed Palm Civet, Asian Small-clawed Otter and Lesser Mousedeer which are already part of the new trail.

As per @LeMandaiEnthusiast‧ , the pangolin trail has its soft opening to guests today. The pangolin trail as a whole consists of the new walkway and exhibits taking over from the Himalayan Tahr exhibit as well as the already established Fishing Cat Trail, combining to become one single trail. The fishing cat trail name is now defunct.

The new trail opened with exhibits with these species on display.
Sumatran palm civet
Barn owl
Binturong
Asian small-clawed otter
Buffy fish owl
Leopard cat
Small-toothed palm civet
Spotted Giant Flying squirrel
Sunda slow loris
Lesser mousedeer

@LeMandaiEnthusiast‧ should have more pictures and notes on the trail from today so hear the rest from him!

Aye boss. Before we begin however, here's a few notes for the Trail as of right now that I'd say would be necessary.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
1. It's currently a soft opening, so on what @Nadchew_ mentioned before, the signboards are installed but many of their lights are not ready, so unlighted at all. Got the flash warning from the keepers monitoring when I was checking the signboards lmao

2. The Trail actually lets people see parts of the Tram Route, though still tricky. The easiest(?) animal habitat that can be spotted would be the Markhor's, though far glimpses can also catch the Bharal and even the Greater Flamingo.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

List of Enclosures:

- Barn Owl (No Pango)

- Sunda Pangolin focused enclosure (ft. Spotted Giant Flying Squirrel, Lesser Mousedeer and Sunda Slow Loris)

*Spotted Giant Flying Squirrel is very active, will more than likely be the first animal you spot running around

- Common Palm Civet (Apparently also ft. Pangolin)

This is where the Pangolin Hut will seperate the enclosure mentioned before and the one below it, currently unopened so I'll update this eventually (unless another ZooChatter strikes first)

- Leopard Cat & Small-Toothed Palm Civet (Ft. Pangolin).

*This is also the only enclosure with a large body of water, deep enough for swimming I should add. Lucky whoever Scaly fella would be stationed in that enclosure.

- Buffy Fish Owl (No Pango)

*Yes, this makes our 11th species the Malay Fish Owl. I was hoping for the Sunda Scops which is a bit of a shame.

- Otters and Binturong (No Pango)

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Personal Notes:

With the exception of the Otter and Binturong, the enclosures are pretty...Alright. Some could be bigger and the backdrops are pretty boring for now. Some are pretty darn tall however which I find cool.

All signboards are in English. Their "mini map" to show the trail's trajectory has been updated to the realistic animal renders and is also fully in English (I kindly ask y'all to put me out of my misery)...However has quite a lot of focus on Pangolins from massive image boards printed out to extra signboards detailing the facts of Pangolins

With the current massive crowds due to the Chinese Summer Holidays, the trail can be decently crammed and very noisy from excited guests which might be a massive pain.

It's probably best to enter this trail when the light is up, might make things a lot easier to spot but I've yet to try this since as of the time writing this it was already pretty dark. Also, the ridiculous amount of people that will be charging in.

Overall, it's a pretty alright trail. Good at highlighting the Pangolins (assuming they'll show up which is far more likely due to them being in a lot of the enclosures now), but still has room for improvement.

I'm just really happy that the Pangolins are finally back on display with the Spotted Giant Flying Squirrel as a bonus.

(They still should've left one by the old Southeast Asian native enclosure frfr)

Lastly, here's some of the photos I snagged, not the best since a lot of the guests were making their way so it was quite a rush.

*Extra note, some of the photographs of the animals were brightened by my phone's normal camera function, it's about as bright as the Civet Walkthrough I'd say with some decent dark spots

But with that said..

THE PANGOLIN TRAIL.

THE PANGOLIN TRAIL IS REEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL

Surprised its that crowded as its August although there's a long weekend from Singapore's National Day. Night Safari definitely feels a lot more crowded than the other parks even on non-peak July and August, can't imagine how it's like on peak season around June and November-December :p

Hope the eastern white pelicans are moving in soon.

So is each pangolin rotated around the enclosures and is allowed to go to whichever enclosure they please?

THE PANGOLIN TRAIL.

THE PANGOLIN TRAIL IS REEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL

So basically this leaves multiple exhibits with the same species along the leopard trail and nothing new? There's a civet walk-through along the leopard trail, another binturong and otter enclosure along the leopard trail as well, then there is another exhibit that ALSO had small-toothed palm civet and a leopard cat and the buffy fish owl was ALSO housed along the trail with spotted wood owls. I think there was a binturong enclosure along the Fishing trail as well! What will happen to these? Are they going to continue housing the same species? *sighs*

From my understanding, the buffy fish owls and small-toothed palm civets have been breeding well, and perhaps for the time being these can be a way to house them without having be confined to back-of-house facilities

THE PANGOLIN TRAIL IS REEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL

Thanks for the comprehensive update. Now is not a bad time to visit actually as the enclosure lights are typically brightest when first open, before being gradually darkened.

The barn owl and flying squirrel are new in the sense that they've been off display for years. For pangolin trail and Rainforest Wild Asia, think of their worth through the viewing experience. They have similar creatures to the other parks but a very different way of seeing them; Pangolin Trail provides better views of arboreal animals and the pangolins and Rainforest Wild Asia has a very adventurous feel and experience for lack of a better term, which is very different from how you'd see them in the other parks

So even if technically Rainforest Wild may seem redundant as all Mandai parks focus on rainforest animals especially from Asia, the selling point of Rainforest Wild is the experience. Same goes with the pangolin trail

Also to add to what @Nadchew_ has said, now is an extremely hectic period for new animal acquisitions for both Bird Paradise and Rainforest Wild, with quarantine and holding space running low. So new animal acquisitions for Night Safari will take a while.

Can't the small-toothed palm civet be added to the walkthrough? Also, since I haven't been to the night safari for a while, is it easy to spot the civet in their walkthrough enclosure?

The walkthrough already have quite a number of the civets. As I said before, its mainly about space. Adding the juveniles may result in lesser space per individual as well as potential inbreeding. The civets are easy to spot in the walkthrough.
