So How About the Weather....

So far here in the UK we are having a mild but wet and rather windy winter, in fact I have been house sitting this week and the rain gage has shown an inch of rain so far THIS year considering the average for North Essex is 16-20 that is a lot of water in 4 days.
I may be wrong nanoboy, but 1m of snow can't equate to 1m of rain I belive the ratio is nearer 1 inch of rain = 1 foot of snow or 2.5c./30cm due to the fact snow is lighter than rain and is expanded many times the size of a rain drop

I said 100mm of rain though. :p

1mm of rain equates to about 1cm of snow. So 100mm of rain is about 1,000mm (=1m) of snow.

Sorry nanoboy I miss read it my mistake:o

my New years resolution is to read posts more carefully.

Haha, no worries. My New Year's resolution is to type more slowly to make sure readers can understand what I am trying to say.

Here in New York we won't see the worst of it: we are too near the moderating influence of the coast.
But the overnight low last night was +11c.... the overnight low tonight is expected to be -13c (windchill at -29c)
In between, it is raining somewhat heavily. The snow is of course melting. The ground is still frozen beneath so it is all (along with the rain) run off

So homeless people are in for another hard time.
And so are drivers as the roads become ice again.

Meanwhile, at the Minnesota Zoo: over night low of -28c (not wind chill: actual temperature) and today's forecast high is -25c. Wind at 20mph (32 kph)

What Storm?

Michigan has been having a heavy winter so far. Our snowfall totals are currently high enough that people are choosing to comes ski here instead of the rockies. Currently Grand Rapids is the 6th city this winter with more than 100,000 people. This nothing like what they have in Houghton, MI though. In Houghton, MI the snowfall total is 165 inches so far this winter.

The main factor here though is the cold, it is currently -26c where I live with the windchill and due to get colder. For pete's sake, at night we are suppose reach -32c! Even though us michiganders can take some extreme weather, we eventually reach a point where enough is enough. This weather has definetley caused me to hear some intresting things to be said about what people think, or want to do to Al Gore. Attached are two picture I thought you guys would appreciate of the Michigan Weather. One maybe a fake.

That will play havoc with the plantings in parks and gardens, not to mention the wildlife and zoo animals. At least the zoo can keep the livestock indoors. I don't envy you folks the weather at present, it's bad enough here with the wind and rain without sub zero temps. today has been very mild, I have been gardening without my padded jacket this afternoon. after the rain last night and this mornings i didn't think I'd be able to do anything.
As long as the wind doesn't turn from the North or East it will suit me just fine, it may be wet but it's not freezing.

Are the Great Lakes frozen solid?

I have read that winters used to be far more severe a generation ago, so this cold snap isn't anything extraordinary in the long term: it feels so cold because people have forgotten how it used to be in the old days. Toughen up guys! :D We need a few really cold winters to help stave off an overall temperature increase. Take one for the team, folks. :D

The most of the great lakes are completely or almost frozen solid. Lake Superior never freezes solid because it is Lake Superior and it does what it wants.

Today is the coldest it has been for several weeks in Southern California...a nice and cloudy 68 degree day! :p

And we will be back in the high 70s by the middle of next week! :D

Although I would trade some rain for some sunshine with you guys! We really need rain. lol
