South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes news thread 2015

SL are supposed to be getting another 1.2 Sumatrans - so mixing two unrelated males would be out of the question (unless he wants one dead!)

You never know, it could be another 'studbook recommendation'. ;)

Interesting to hear Gill wants an ape exhibit, I was once told by staff he'd never house orangutans because they're 'too far gone to help'... Couple of questions, does anyone know of any other additions? I know of Bactrian camels.. And when does the full expanded site open?

The new bear and spider monkey facility is coming on. Some pictures show a walk through platform.

This may be a silly question but does anyone have any news regarding elephants in the expansion at the zoo? Wikipedia, which I presume South Lakes have edited from time to time, seems to indicate elephants will be heading there, but i haven't read anything on the facebook page etc to support it. Anyone have any news? "As of 2015, the park is undergoing a multi-million pound expansion, which involves the introduction of African elephants for the first time."

South Lakes....

Opens up the exciting possibility of an African Elephant and Polar Bear walk-through......., possibly combined with Fruit Bats?

I see that all those horrible pathways have all now been Tarmaced - will really improve the zoo for pushchair/disabled users.

The miniature railway is now expanding into the new site.

It's my belief that the local council turned down plans for an elephant house and keeping elephants.

Will try to head over in the next week or so to see what's changing. Hoping the new kids play area will be open in time for summer.

A Brazilian Tapir and a female Sumatran Tiger both left Arnhem this morning for South Lakes

Photo on David Gill's personal page of the zoos new 'road train' have to say, it does look really rather good, some serious money being spent on this extension I think!

Does anyone have any news of the new female Sumatran the zoo received last week? They confirmed receiving her but since that, no mention and no photographs... Messaged the zoo asking if she was on show yesterday, message read and I've had no reply, don't want to fear the worst!

I asked that in my message, had no reply though. 'New Sumatran Tiger!' Was posted on the page on the 16th

They are definitely getting 3 new tigers altogether. A keeper said that on my last visit. They have also started the new road junction for the new entrance last week.

Went to the zoo this week, few things I picked up on:
1. The tiger house itself has been completely remodelled, possibly instructed so since the unfortunate tradgedy two years ago
2. New Aviary is actually really very good!! Was wonderful to see the birds being able to truly fly, vultures were flying full length of the enclosure
3. Flamingo exhibit is very open plan again, something Gill seems to be making his thing, very low bamboo fence, more of a boundary than a fence really.
4. New hippo enclouser is huge, perhaps too much so - but the pool is tiny
5. Spotted two zebra in the extension grazing through the top end of the new aviary, did get pictures so will upload here soon
6. Didn't see ANY capuchins in the America exhibit, has SL made any statement on getting rid of them?
7. New giraffe/reindeer housing can't come quick enough, honestly lets down the entire zoo, was horribly messy and you can tell it isn't cleaned regularly, just covered with more hay.

The tiger house has been remodelled so it can hold four tigers. New giraffe and rhino house will open as soon as the new entrance does. They are just waiting for the road junction to be widened. This was started the other week. The new bear/spider monkey enclosure is coming on as well.

I wondered whether some of the rhinos have already moved to the new site as there was only four when visited the other week? Does anyone know how manga they have these days?

Four sounds the right number that they have,as for any leaving for other collections I believe not in the last 6-8 months,so any that have left during that time have left for good!

The zoo has five rhino, they did a swap with a zoo last year of one - who is still grey when the rest are the clay red from the mud at the zoo!
