South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes / Safari Zoo Closure

According to the BBC,Tebay Parish Council are opposing the application for the new venture. The Parish Council have said that the scheme would not suit the very special landscape. They have also raised concerns about access from the main A685 road. The application is also under consideration by the Yorkshire Dale's National Park Authority.

Parish Councils are well known for objecting to everything pretty much - often a case not of nimby'ism, but more like 'if I cant have it, I dont want you to have it either'. CPRE will do the same.
Any development in a National Park is likely to be an uphill slog, with many more layers of bureaucracy at the VERY least.

When it comes to "Free-range" species, what is currently there? Is there the chance any of these can be rehomed?

Most (if not all) of the free-roaming ducks, geese and swans have already been re-homed. There's still all of the lemurs, along with the emu and rhea, prairie dogs, capybaras, kangaroos, peafowl and at least one muntjac deer. I imagine out of all of those the prairie dogs might be the hardest to round up because of how large and far-reaching their burrows are.

The sloth and meerkats have been moved to "a non-profit conservation and education centre in Hertfordshire." According to local press.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is Ventura, now based at the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery.
I was wondering if it could be there. I will keep an eye on their Facebook page for any announcements and will potentially be visiting on their first open day (normally Easter).

Please do get updates photos of enclosures etc.

On my visit on the 29th I can't say I seen any indication of the zebras even still being there, signage was taken down, none were in the stalls unless they lay down all day, none outside in a paddock + no diet chart on the whiteboard.
Out of interest, what did you perceive as still on site during your visit. Might be an interesting read fairly informative for most on this thread! Hope you can take the time to look into it.

Me and @alfiethetortois visited on the same day and further up in this thread you should be able to find both of our lists as to what we personally seen! If it's not here, it should be one of the last messages in SL 2024 :)

I visited on 29/1 here's the list of what I saw - didn't see any zebra.

Visited the zoo today 29/12

Top walk through section closed to general public seemed to be open for tours (bears to top avery)

List of what we saw:

Meerkats (2)
Giraffe (2 Africa) (3 top)
Rhino (6)
Peacocks
Wilderbeast (1)
Honey badgers (2)
Kangaroo
Wallaby
Emu
Andean Bears (2)
Red ruffled lemurs
Capabara
Red panda (unseen)
Cotton topped tamarin
Tapir (2)
Otter (1)
White ruffed lemur
Ring tailed lemurs
Sumatran tiger (1)
Simang
Gibbons
Spider monkey
Maned wolf (unseen)
Hamadryas baboons (apx 30 inc several babies)
Snow leopard (1)
Jaguar (unseen)
Lion (1 male 1 female)

Lots of people milling around.

Bears enclosure much improved since our last visit. Lots of buildings look like work is needed. Vulture Avery completely empty - around five macaws in Avery type cages inside. Sloth may be housed in top building.

Really feel for staff, many of which looked gutted about the closure when people asking about the future of the animals.

The zoo put out a statement on Facebook today in response to a BBC investigative journalist suggesting they were involved with the two lynx that were illegally released into the wild in Scotland last week. They've re-iterated that this incident has nothing to do with them, they won't be responding directly to the BBC about this, and the four Canada lynx they once had were re-homed to Hamerton Zoo on 27th December.

Exactly the kind of reason people need to be careful with speculation here. They didn't even have the same species of lynx as the released animals..!
