Southwick's Zoo Southwicks Zoo News

I shall have to go again too. I'm kind of hoping that they will collect some of the hair when they shed or at whatever time the wool is usually taken for economic purposes and weave it together so the public can have the chance to see what to feels like, given that Vicuna is so prized for that purpose.

I don't think this is the same import AZA zoos like Beardsley and LA are getting animals from.

AFAIK, none of those animals have left Europe yet and I'd be surprised if any of those animals would end up in non-AZA zoos considering I believe the import is suppose to give the species a foothold in the AZA. Also, if I remember correctly, the initial import is of only 12 animals and with Beardsley already getting 4.0, I'd be surprised if so many of the other individuals were sent to Southwick's.

Does anyone still visit this zoo? Is it still pretty nice? I'm visiting the area this fall and was thinking maybe I'd do this zoo instead of some of the smaller AZA zoos in MA. Thanks!

Had a very nice visit yesterday. Since my last visit a couple of years ago they have built a separate reptile house which I found quite nice. They also added a large sit down restaurant. They now have Cheetahs, Vicunas and a new giraffe feeding area since my last visit. Saw a Tamandua and a Virginia Opossum thru a fence that are either ambassador animals or not yet on exhibit. Website is about 98% accurate for what they have. Most of the animals were active and visible biggest miss for me personally was the Japanese Pond Turtle which were not visible. Lots of babies including a Vicuna, sloth and several different primate species.

I have found this to be the worst zoo I have ever visited. All the primate exhibits spread throughout the zoo are too small and many animals need exhibit upgrades. The exhibits are also all basic cages and not high-quality. There also is no educational value to the zoo and the animals are kind of randomly placed. I wish there were distinct areas for African species or Asian species, etc.

Can you give more detail about why you dislike or, in your words, why its the worst zoo you visited? And please name what facilities have far better primate enclosures that you have seen. Thanks

Better primate exhibits-
Lemur islands and debrazza monkeys at Capron Park Zoo
Gibbon exhibit at Roger Williams Park Zoo
Mandrills and Lemurs at Franklin Park Zoo
Goeldis Monkeys at Buttonwood Park Zoo
Monkey Island at Cleveland zoo
Orangutans at Cleveland Zoo
Mandrills at Columbus Zoo
Primate House at Lincoln Park Zoo

The animal collection is good and I am certain there are worst zoos out there I have not visited but exhibits are placed in random spots- not sections dedicated to Africa, Asia, primates, native species, etc. Also, all the exhibits, even the well_sized ones are simple chain-link fenced cages and are not realistic.

Did the gibbons at RWPZ get a new enclosure or something? :p

I don't disagree with you about most of Southwicks primate enclosures but I do not think that gibbon one is very good
