Stone Zoo Stone Zoo

animal care person said they have 4 female markor as the barn isn’t big enough to house more. in the past, they had more but new gidelines, I gess? they fixed the retane wall by the markor barn. I wonder if barn where wolf signage on wall could be used to house more?
I almost always see them, but you have to look around and be patient. They can be on either side of the rock hill, so look from near the yak and also from just beyond the snow leopards. Check each side a couple times during your visit. Also, they can blend in, so look carefully. It's true that they can be completely out of sight, but I usually find them with a little effort if not right away.

Now, the ringtails are another story. They most be the most difficult animal to see.

I wish they would swap 1-2 female markhor and in exchange acquire a male.

Interesting! I’ll spend more time at that exhibit next time I visit. Does anyone know if the zoo has any plans for renovations or construction? I know that they might be spending most of the money at fpz right now but besides from the recent butterfly garden is there anything else?

I don't think much is going on. They have been without arctic fox for some time. Last I was there technicians were working on the wires above the black neck crane side of the crane exhibit. Believe the only things that were sone were moving some animals around like the hyrax and adding chinchilla. The reindeer exhibit is small and split. If San Diego used to have them on a hill yard why not move them across from cranes on the hill?

This is the pair from the Franklin Park ambassador area. They were moved in on Tuesday afternoon.
Do you know any more about them, such as their age or sex? Are they retired from being ambassador animals? Do you know where the prehensile tail porcupines went?

The male is 4 and the female is estimated to be around 7-8 (she was a confiscation so her birthday is unknown). They were moved from FPZ as their current habitat is more suitable than their previous one, and they no longer fit the programming plans for the education department. While they're not technically "retired," they won't be used as ambassadors for classroom programs, etc.

The porcupines are still at the zoo, just not on exhibit at the moment.

Are they just moving animals around windows while they paint the walls and lay tree chips on the cement floor?

A new baby colobus was just on exhibit today. Not sure if there has been any formal announcement but its bright white so very young. Also not sure if mentioned before but hyacinth macaws were moved to another zoo. Also a flamingo was moved today, but i am not sure why. If i have a chance i will tr to ask a keeper or other staff member about plans with markhor, as they're difficult to see and two have died in recent years. Also according to a night shift security member the mexican wolves bite the fence and scream in the middle of the night

I'm disappointed to learn that the hyacinth macaws were relocated to another facility. They were fun to watch, and I especially thought they brought a bit of brightness and joy to winter visits.
