A Rainforest Buildling in a zoo surrounded by Rainforest ? So what comes next-a Desert Dome at Abu Dhabi Zoo ? Hopefully the tapirs and Giant Anteaters get access to outdoor exhibits.
 
I welcome the new Rainforest Dome development. It is a stand out in the crowd exhibit and highlighting the flagship pangolin as a species conservation icon (NOTE: Taipeh Zoo has long term husbandry and animal management experience of both breeding and raising of the Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) at the zoo.


Seemingly lost in all the news for 2019 it was not reported the zoo received 4 black-faced spoonbills from Tama Zoo, Tokyo in Japan in January last!

Interestingly, their collaboration goes back to 2003 when a lone and injured male black-faced spoonbill (arrival in 2002) was sent on B/L to Tokyo Tama by Taipeh Zoo. At Tama Zoo he was paired up with a female of the species and they (first) bred in 2013. One of the now imported 4 birds is a direct descendent of this male emigrant.

A female Giant panda cub was born 28 June:

A giant panda gifted by China to Taiwan has given birth to a second female cub after being artificially inseminated, Taipei Zoo announced Monday.

Yuan Yuan and her partner Tuan Tuan have been top attractions since arriving from China in 2008 as a symbol of what were then warm relations between the two sides.

The unnamed cub, weighing 186 grammes, was born on Sunday after a five-hour labour, the zoo said. "We were hoping the mother could look after the cub. But Yuan Yuan was probably very tired from the birth... so after evaluation we decided to remove the cub" to be fed by caretakers, the zoo said in a statement.

It added that the newborn cub was in stable condition after being treated for a minor injury to its back.

An interesting note:

Yuan Yuan gave birth to a daughter Yuan Zai in 2013 -- the first giant panda born in Taiwan. Beijing usually only loans its pandas, and any progeny must be sent to China. But in a rare departure from that protocol, Taiwan was allowed to keep Yuan Zai as her parents were a gift, according to Taipei officials.

I remember when China sent these Pandas to Taiwan they said they could keep them as China considers Taiwan as part of China and not another country!
 
First breeding of Poison dart frogs:

The Taipei Zoo this week announced that it had for the first time bred poison dart frogs that arrived in Taiwan last year, although it warned that a sharp eye is needed to see the young frogs.

The impregnated frog laid six eggs, of which three hatched, the zoo said, adding that it retrieved the eggs and waited for the tadpoles to emerge.

The female Giant panda cub has been named 'Yuanbao':

The second cub of the panda pair from the Chinese mainland was formally named "Yuanbao," the Taipei Zoo announced Sunday.

The name 'Yuanbao' beat the other five options by obtaining 8,712 votes in an online poll that saw the participation of about 26,000 people from Aug. 17 to 26, the zoo said in a press release.

While Yuanbao means "the baby of Yuan Yuan" in Chinese, the character "bao" bears an auspicious indication in Chinese.

In 2019, Taipei got 1 male Siamang from Lille Zoo, 4 (2,2) Black-faced Spoonbills from Tama Zoological Park, 3 male African Penguins and 1 female Aye-aye from Ueno Zoological Park, 2 female western lowland gorillas from Apenheul Primate Park, 8 (1,7) Black-capped Squirrel Monkeys from Basel Zoo, 1 male Cotton-top Tamarin from Singapore.

In 2020, Taipei has got a male Asian small-clawed Otter from Singapore.
