Gerenuk are back in Europe! They are currently being held off-show at the Tierpark.

Some recent and not so recent news:

- Apparently only 1,0 Javanese leopard made it.

- The TP is to receive (or already received?) Echnidas or Spiny Anteaters. So far it is not officially known if they will be displayed and if so where. But they will definitely stay in the Tierpark. They could well be kept in the pachydermy building.

- The TP also received 5 Northern Gannets which live with the African penguins now. I don't know if they will stay there for good, but it seems like they will remain there for the time being.

- I heard it is 2 Gerenuks, but I don't know the sex (of course I hope it is 1,1) or where they will be kept (Tierpark or Zoo).

- The hall in the Brehm building could still reopen this year (perhaps in fall?). The polar bear enclosure should be finished any time now. It is basically finished, only the space behind the steps Needs to be filled and evened out. So far there is no constructions by the outside enclosures of the cats, the prairie dog enclosure or the bald eagle aviary.

- The list of May births/ hatchings has been published. Where available I at least translated the German terms of the mammals. Perhaps some one can translate some of the rest or the birds/ reptiles:

Echidnas have been received. They are the New Guinea subspecies, Tachyglossus aculeatus lawesii , but are not on public exhibit.

Thank you for confirming this Information. Do you also happen to know the sex ratio and if they will be on public exhibit in the future?

Sorry, I don't know the sex ratio. No plans at the moment for them to go on exhibition, but that might change.

One hopes they would go on exhibition in the future; Europe could do with an increase in onshow echidnas!

Personally I hope Paignton get some of the recent influx of lawesii once their elderly non-ssp status individual goes to the anthill in the sky.

That is bad news. Well I hope they will change their plans and Show them to the public. Do you know how many echidnas they got anyways?

At the risk of looking like an idiot why do zoos do this? Is it just as part of a breeding programme, and being on public view would not be helpful for this?

lots of people always wonder why zoos keep animals off-display for no apparent reason.

In this case though, if the previous imports of New Guinea echidnas to Europe are anything to go by, the animals are young ones and need special care to survive. (See here for example: http://www.zoochat.com/327/animal-news-zoo-praha-26413/index12.html)

Three echidnas were received; the last I heard, the plan was to have them in one fo the large enclosures in the elephant house, seen from outside the house (where the hutias are at the moment).

This said, as they are young individuals and the species can live for several decades, if they survive we will hopefully have the species in Europe for a good long while - plenty of time for some at least to go onshow!

Be even better if someone got the species bred in Europe; both Frankfurt and Saarbrücken have had limited success in the past 20 years or so in this area, but I am unsure as to whether the offspring survived.
