Toronto Zoo Tundra Trek - Members Preview Nights

OO I plan to, I will have a whole review done! Lots of pictures to go with it!

The Tundra is amazing!!!A huge improvement from the former polar bear exhibit, better viewing of the arctic wolves and snowy owls, and a few new animals like snow geese and arctic foxes. It is nice to see a polar bear exhibit with some grass in it and no grotto!!!Good job TZ!!

Thanks for the video and really wish I could see this exhibit sooner :(

Can't wait for pictures and reviews and have a good time

P.S.

Animalman, you mentioned arctic foxes but as far as we have heard here, they're exhibit wasn't yet started

If they are on exhibit, where were they located?

No problem, I'm going this coming Monday with friends so I'll take some pictures when I get the chance. ^^

Well, well, well. The Tundra Trek. Like I said before WOW. To some it up, Polar bear Exhibit: Excellent, Reindeer Exhibit: Excellent, Snow Geese Exhibit: Excellent, Arctic Wolf Exhibit: Excellent.

Now the details I will post pictures asap. The Tundra Trek goes all the way up there with the Arctic Ring of Life at the Detriot Zoo, and Polar Bear Plunge at the San Deigo Zoo and could possibly be second best, if not the best polar bear exhibit in North America.

Polar Bear Exhibit: Huge, has trees, grass, rocks, dirt, saltwater pools, the ideal state of the art exhibit. The rocks however do look fake, all that needs to happen is the weathering. If they were weathered they would look real. They have all sorts of lichen colours on them.

Reindeer Exhibit: Huge, has trees, grass and other features

Snow Geese Exhibit: Nice, deep pool, although they were not allowed to swim (6 weeks old), grass, trees

Snowy Owl Exhibit: caves, platforms, grass, rocks, very nice.

Arctic Wolf Exhibit: looks 100% just like the wild. tall grass, weeds, rocks, pools.

Arctic Fox Exhibit: Under Construction, got some pics from over then fence not much done but building there.

These exhibits will look amazing when the winter arrives. The viewing for all exhibits is brilliant and you can see that this exhibit focuses on kids as well, canoes, whale skeletons, fox burrows, planes, caves with windows into the bear exhibit. The exhibit was a breath taker, extreamly amazing, one of a kind!

Just goes to show the lengths the zoo and designers went to make a brillant exhibit. I could see this winning the AZA Exhibit Design Award!

Can't wait for the future projects for the zoo, ie African Rainforest Pavilion, Eurasia, etc.

Just came back, and it was incredible :D Finally the wolves have an a big area to run and play, the polar bears bear exhibit was terrific and I was delighted with how popular the Snow Geese were. I expected people to just walk past them but I was wrong!

Sounds like both of you had a terrific time! I'm so anxious to go and see the new exhibits with my friends! You guys make it sound so exciting and I have high expectations from what i heard from you two! I'm glad you guys had an awesome time! ^^ I do agree with you that the rock work does look fake, but hopefully over time will look more realistic! Thanks! :D

I had very high expectations, I thaught they were even to high, but I was very wrong.

In many ways it reminded me of the savannah exhibit (with the jeep = bush plane artifacts, etc) and that is a good thing :) I'm really looking forward to seeing the maternity den being put to use and I think Inushuk looks like he's ready to make that happen :D

I would have to second you on that Meaghan, he is more then ready, one problum though the breeding season is in April to May.

Poor guy :D I heard a keeper say they will introduce him them soon. The females weren't paying the least bit attention to him, one of them even had a surprise treat in the form of a dragonfly that landed on her paw.

Pictures added to Gallery! Some not all, just to keep you all occupied! I am going again tomorrow. I even got face to face with a bear in the den!

Wow, this really did turn out amazing!

Just from pictures, I'm going to do a review of what I think

Old polar bear exhibit: Wow, this is such a huge transformation from the old, disgusting exhibit they used to call home. The viewing looks awesome, the rockwork is iffy but bearable (lol), the pool is a huge improvment (Although I would have liked it not so square in formation and maybe expanded a bit wider), the land area is awesome and the underwater viewing is breathtaking and a massive improvement from the dank, empty former counterpart

New polar bear enclosure: ~drops dead~ Amazing!!! The land area looks MASSIVE, I love the fact that it has grass and foliage, again... not such great rock work but its not horrible

The viewing looks awesome and unobstructed (Although some glass would be nice, but thats just being picky)

The only real dissapointment is the absence of a large pool but the stream and pond are nice and I see how this enxlosure depicts a more grassland tundra exhibit whereas the old exhibit is more of a rocky coast

Snowy owl aviary: This would have to be my least favourite of the amazing bunch. Although it contains alot of flying space and ground material, The absence of perches and trees make it seem a bit bare

Its understandble though because snowy owls are mostly ground nesters

It is still a great exhibit but just not my favourite

Arctic wolf enclosure: This might actually be my favourite of the bunch! The vast space, the landscaping and the foliage are awesome and the bridge just tops it all off. Only complaint is the never ending chain-link but I see that its needed to keep them contained

Goose Camp: A very nice addition! The geese are a nice break from large animals and there exhibit is very good. I wonder if they plan to hold any other species of bird in here as well?

Reindeer enclosure: Only saw a small part of the enclosure but it looks like a huge improvment from the Eurasia enclosure. More trees would have been nice but they would have been done pretty fast without hotwire

All in all, I am very pleased with the new exhibit and can't wait to see it in person, thatnk you so much for all the pictures and I can't wait to anticipate the next big exhibit with you all!

P.S. Does anyone know of a commercial for Tundra Trek? I would be shocked if there wasn't one as for all of our new exhibits since 2007, we've had commercials (Dinosaurs Alive, Stingray Bay, Great Barrier Reef, SHARKS at Stingray Bay)

As for commercials Zoogoer I think maybe one next year, or one in the near future to boost winter attendence? It all depends on the marketing team!

Nice Review! Although I would say the reindeer was my least favourite, I liked the snowy owl avairy.

I saw a group of what I think were kids standing in front of the Wolf exhibit but what it was about I'm sorry I do not know.
