Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

Hi does anyone know the full family tree of twycross orangs? They have had a lot like molly and Kayan and another female move in recent years and I’m wondering if they are all related

Yes they're related. Here's the quick version of the family.

Jod and Twiggy, two wild-born Orangutans, were the parents of Kibriah (and several others), born at Twycross in 1977. She died in 2021 at Twycross.
Kibriah was mother to:
Theodora b. 1988
Maliku b. 1994 (still at Twycross)
Tiga b. 2001 (now at Colchester)
Kayan b. 2017 (now at Monkey World)

Maliku has had:
Miri b. 2004 (now at Rostock)
Molly b. 2011 (now at Wingham)
Basuki b. 2017 (still at Twycross)

The youngsters leave as they reach maturity - with the exception of Kayan, who left earlier than usual due to Kibriah passing away.

Tiga, Kayan, Miri, Molly and Basuki are all Batu's offspring. There have been many others born at Twycross over the years, many related in some way.

Had a nice wander this morning quite a queue to get in but as members we sent through so that was nice saw lope (gorilla) in his new pad he looked very chilled lying down outside they had 3 food trucks by the picnic area and all the kiosks were open including a slushy station there is some works ongoing to the left of the bush dogs new fencing I think, was quite impressed with some of the new paint work it certainly improves the place I guess it’s a Start we were only there an hr and glad we went early as the queues were massive when we left during the holidays I would only go first thing or after 3pm bushdogs and tigers were a no show typically lol

Went to Twycross today, lope is looking well in his bachelor pad. Saw the tigers out during feeding time. The male was in the front paddock and the female in the back. Whenever the male saw the female he would run straight to the fence separating them while the female would run away with her food.

Went to the family group of gorillas and I have to say. I wasn’t sure which gorilla it was but I believe it was Ozala. She looked rather… circular and putting on the pounds. She is either expecting an offspring or eating a bit more then she needs to.

It was extremely busy today so I didn’t stop long but it was nice just to walk around.

We were watching ozala and thought the same

It isn’t the first time that I’ve seen her this large and circular and I know others on here think it too. Perhaps a baby gorilla will be joining Twycross soon or she is just very fat haha

Looking at the photo of the work going on at the bush dogs area it look like there fencening it of like they did the tigers area for construction. Hopefully this is for a future development, though I haven’t seen any planing and not just to hide it away though that would be better than more empty enclosures possibly the penguins new enclosure on the master plan or some thing new. I would think the bush dogs have gone now as I don’t think Twycross has any of show areas really, I wonder if these are the ones YWP are after.

It would be sad if they went, although they’re never really on show haha. Twycross do have a backstage area but it’s not massive. It’s next to the
(might misspell her name) Mary Branker? walkway near the giraffes and grass paddock for the rhino. Photo taken in March.

I think the storks where in there for a while till they left, if they where still there I would think they would still be on show to be honest, they would fit in the enclosures to the left where the dik dik and tortoise are for the two there have

I was there today( Friday). I might write my own review but to comment on a few of your points...

There were no L'Hoests in the old Bonobo/Totroise House. The enclosures were being renovated. There were two not in the main group that are now in an enclosure near the DikiDik antelope.

I agree the part of the zoo nearest the main road is in a very poor state. The yellow-throated marten enclosure is just boarded up, and the Long House area is completely closed off, though I'm not surprised if it is falling to pieces now.

The indoor of the monkey house( De Brazzas & Langurs)- has been closed for some years now, also the Diana house( ex gorilla house-no entry, just a service area now) and now L'Hoests too, are all closed, probably for a mixture of dilapidation, ease of maintenance and I think also to reduce stress to the monkeys- e.g. the inside area in the Monkey House is very narrow and so its close-up to the monkeys. Its not ideal for visitors though as they can't see them if they are inside.. I think the zoo work on the premise that most visitors are not unduly worried as long as they see a few of the various monkeys there.

The one way system is long gone while those intrusive barrier fences everywhere do seem a lot less prominent than previously, but there are still places where the blocking of access paths seems pointless e.g. behind the zebras to name just one. There are others too.

Although its old now, I think the gorilla enclosure is still fit for the six occupants until the new enclosures get built.. The outside area is nothing special, but its perfectly adequate. If 10 year old blackmale male Lope needs to be seperated from the group in due course, then they will simply remove him to another of the old ape enclosures (or to another zoo).

I hope that Lope moves to new enclosure like Bristol or YWP when they're finished.

He will certainly be a good test subject in that enclosure for the rest of the troop should they move them over there when it become available to allow them to build the new enclosure for them on the original site or even before hand if they move them for the science center if they ever build it

Definitely !
Hopefully the work will begin soon on the new Great Ape exhibits and Science centre.

Does anyone know the background of:
Tuli, Victoria and Josie?
Were they born at the zoo and it so who were their parents or were they wild caught?

Im doing a research project about the chimps at Twycross and how to tell the difference between them.

Victoria was born at Twycross in 1988 and hand reared by Molly but I can't remember her parents. Tuli was also born at Twycross in 2010 and her parents were Benjie and Mwekundu. Josie I believe was born at Dudley Zoo.

When I used to be a volunteer, there were a lot more Chimps then and I could tell the difference between all of them.

I used to have a list of all of them from studbook numbers, to place of birth, parents, offspring etc but sadly lost it.

First visit today for a long while, but hope to be back more often. Noticed that there was a lot of work being prepped by the Bush Dog enclosure, and the walkway behind by the Yellow-throated martens was closed off.

Saw the new little heritage area near the Giraffes, with the props used back in the Chimps Tea Party / PG Tips days, which was very interesting.

Questions for those more familiar with Twycross, are the chimps a breeding group? And which of the great apes are due a new house next, is it the Orangs?
