Her name was Ndoki, not Namoki. Matadi will be 5 in March, but a new young male would be fine for him.

Yes- whoops, 'Namoki' is Romina's baby at Bristol. 'Matadi' is 5 on 25th March.. time flies as I haven't seen him in two or three years.

He could probably cope okay with a new male - depends entirely on the new male's temperament. There's a 10 year old 'Kumbuka' in the bachelor group at Paignton Zoo who is unrelated to Ozala and Asante, or alternatively there's plenty of choice at Howletts/Port Lympne.

Altrnatively, do you think they might simply make one group with SamSam as the male? He's old and gentle and wouldn't hurt Matadi.

Actually, I'm wrong there- Paignton's male 'kumbuka' IS distantly related to Asante and Ozala, as his grandmother(Zaire) and their father(Mamfe) were half siblings(same father Jambo.) So maybe he wouldn't be such a good choice....

James- what news on the Hamlyn's monkeys- is there now just a pair, or is it a trio and any sign of breeding?

I don't have any photos of Kerry but I can try and take one on my next visit.

Sam-Sam will stay in with our 2 old females, Biddy and Bongo. Sam-Sam is Matadi's grandfather so he won't suit that other group.

I can't say very much.

Keep up! 'Namoki' died about 3 months ago from malnutrition- possibly resulting from her mother being stressed by having no male in the group. So that problem doesn't exist now and the other youngster 'Matadi' is nearly five years old now so should be able to look out for himself- especially if a new youngish male is chosen and introduced carefully. I hope they'll do something about this soon, as the 2nd female 'Asante' has never bred and is the only offspring of wildcaught Eva- who is now dead.

Sorry about that I only discovered this site yesterday so am a bit behind with the goings on

Although SamSam is Matadi's grandfather, he is not related at all to Asante and Ozala. However, as he isn't a surefire breeder it would no doubt be better if they did get a younger male...

Any news on the Hamlyn's monkeys breeding?

Just has a look on the Twycross website 'news' section. No mention of the successful(?) AI procedure on elephant 'Norjahan' but maybe they don't want to publicise this too soon- however there's no news at all since June last year- surely they could update it more often or hasn't anything interesting happened since then?- it gets a poor vote from me...:(

Twycross are currently making a New and Improved website so it shouldn't be long before its done
If this takes as long as it does to do as the Bornean Longhouse to do it will be up and running in about 18 months, any way does anybody know if and when the Rusty-spotted Cats are coming i know they are going to put them in the old Ape Nursery near the Meerkats and whats this i`ve heard about Hyeanas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been to Twycross today and noted down the DOB of the older chimps. The oldest appears to be Coco (F) who was born in 1965 making her 43, Choppers logs in at 1970,Eve was born in 1971 and Noddy in 1972 with Kip and Tojo in 1976. ---- quite an OAP club!.
The female camel had to be euthanased last week. She had been ill for many months and was not responding to treatment . That leaves just one camel in the exhibit opposite the loan male lion.
Norjahan was tethered inside, whilst the remainder of the herd were in the outdoor enclosure. I wonder if her second scan was iminent - there were no staff nearby to ask.
Construction at the bottom end (by entrance ) looks chaotic with no hint of what it might eventually be. Again, no one in evidence to enquire from.

The new entrance, perhaps? (Although I thought construction started later this year...)

Sad news regarding the camel as well, I watched the old episode of 'The Zoo' on the ITV Central website and it was the one where she gave birth.

And since I haven't commented on it, fantastic news about the elephants! However I would still prefer a bull ;) (and obviously, the neccessary quarters)

Is Coco the original chocolate chimp? I hadn't realised she was that old.

Eve was born at Bristol Zoo(Buttons x Elizabeth)- I think she was the last chimp at Bristol and was then relocated to Twycross.

Do Twycross still have Chocolate Chimps? I was reading an old guide book and they mentioned one in the 'animal personalities' section.

Yes: Coco, Jambo and Makwonde (I think from memory that is her name) are all chocolate colour though Makwonde's infant , approx 8 months old now, is black (father Benji).
