West Midland Safari and Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park News 2022

Noah's Ark holds a bachelor group. They are not a breeding facility. As said above, I'm pretty sure, African Elephant's are a recommendation not to be bred in the UK anymore. This was part of the reason, Howletts wanted to rewild theirs now. I was told this by Elephant keepers at Howletts and also Noa's Ark keepers said similar about African Elephants.

I've Googled the question - and looked at the Kept Animals Bill - and there's no mention of any government mandate about this.

Or are BIAZA shifting from African to Asian elephants?

It would make this site a little easier to navigate if people didn't type what they didn't "think" something was the case as fact, without googling it first.
This goes from stating something as legislation, to suggesting chimps have been killed, to stating that building or breeding is any more than their own supposition.
It has been a very annoying last few days with the amount of baseless claims and subsequent debunking on UK forums.

Howletts wants to rewild their elephants because Damian Aspinall believes they belong in Africa and nowhere else. There is no legislation that limit elephant breeding in the UK.
What is ironic is that some African parks are bursting at the seems with to many elephants that they are importing captive bred animals from the UK. o_O

It would be amazing to see African Elephant baby’s! I’m quite excited for the future
Would the best option for West Midlands to be home to a small bachelor herd like noah's ark. Never actually seen the new elephant enclosure but it looks like it has 3 outdoor sections and not sure about the inside though. If tembo is to move, could five then move to Colchester or blair drummond to be with their loan female. However, female Elephants don't seem to do as well with travel than the males because fives sister latabe died just a few days after the move and a female knowsley passed away whilst moving to France. I think a bachelor herd here would be good because with the 3 outdoor enclosures the Elephants could be separated during conflicts. Correct me if I'm wrong tho because I don't follow much about West Midlands safari
Oh yes and that will be really good to see a breeding herd of African Elephants at West Midland Safari Park
I believe WMSP's original plan with the completion of the new enclosure was to build a herd around Five (instead of Sutton), requiring Sutton to be moved out (Noah's Ark seems an obvious choice with its bachelor herd currently only consisting of two individuals), and for a new breeding bull and cows to be brought in joining Five to breed (the latter was always going to be the difficult bit). However, as mentioned in my previous post on this matter, (which seems to have gone mostly unnoticed so I will quote it bellow) there are some problems with this scenario.
1. Whilst talking to an elephant keeper at Colchester Zoo 2 months ago amongst other things I was told that at the moment while the elephants settle into the new Protected Contact system, they are currently temporarily refraining from carrying out any major procedures and elephant moves, so if this is true information about Tembo moving to WMSP the move might not happen for a while...
2. In this conversation I was also informed that Tembo is no longer able to breed, so when Colchester Zoo resume attempts of breeding and building a herd after the current individuals are settled into PC, they will search for a new bull (and cows) to breed through A.I or naturally, so sounds to me like he won't be breeding at West Midlands either.
These are the mains aspects that confuse me of Tembo's supposed move to WMSP, and these points are explained further in my quoted post below, however good luck to Tembo and West Midlands Safari Park for the future, though if he does leave it will be sad to see Tembo go after nearly 25 years at Colchester Zoo.
When is the arrival of Tembo expected (if you know), as this seems to be a bit of a change of direction for WMSP.
There was a lot that I found out when I spoke to a keeper on my visit to Colchester Zoo about 2 months ago, but one of those things was that at the moment they are planning on settling the elephants down with the new routines (moving into PC), and not breeding or moving the elephants around to just calm everything down. Tembo moving in the near future would frankly not really follow that (although plans can change).
I also mentioned when I posted this news and more in African Elephants in Europe and Colchester Zoo news threads that I was also told (if I remember correctly) that Tembo was no longer able to breed, so either way would probably not be breeding if he moved to WMSP.
However, if any of this is true it is big news for these groups of elephants that have all been heavily speculated over previously.

Well as you may never know that time will indeed tell when WMSP is ready to welcome new African Elephants to join Five and start breeding as I remember in 2018 when the Asian Elephants left Twycross Zoo for Blackpool Zoo they went 2 by 2 and that was the females to start and then the search for a new bull elephant begins

"Welcome, Ernie!

Last week, Ernie, a 19-year-old hippo, arrived to join our pod of females at the Park! Here he is getting into his lake for the first time! He came from Flamingo Land Resort, where his mum gave birth to him after living here at the Safari Park with Ernie's dad, so in a way, he has come home to his roots!

He is joining us as part of the European Breeding Programme and plays an important role in his species' survival. Although he is now castrated and not able to breed, his move means that there is more space at Flamingo Land, so breeding can take place there."

It's been a month and a half... and I'm still wondering what the significance of the taxidermised pelicans I kept on seeing when I went was. Are there any plans for WMSP to get pelicans?

I can well remember about the rumors of the pelicans coming to West Midland Safari Park

Is that what the taxidermised pelicans are supposed to indicate? Because I've been wracking my brain as to why they were placed and that seems to be the only explanation I can think of.

(As in, that pelicans are coming to WMSP soon)
