What are your 'must see' recommendations for 2008 and why?

(Once again, if this has been done then stop me :))

What are your 'must-see' priorities for UK collections this year, in terms of new exhibits, species you really want to get to see, or significant breeding results you wish to witness?

1. Gorillas breeding at London (and pigs might fly....;))

2 A male gorilla in the 2nd group at Twycross so that the unbred female 'Asante' (23 years old) may finally have a chance to breed....

3. Formulation of plans to get a bull elephant at Twycross.

4. Planned developments at Dudley to actually happen...

5. Successful Spectacled bear breeding at both Chester & South Lakes.

6. Orangutan 'Padang' to leave Chester and go to Colchester's new exhibit.

I was more thinking along the lines of what new exhibits/species people wanted to go and see that are really happening as opposed to what rightfully we should be able to see, but I like it!

I'd ideally like to see some more babirusa, malayan tapir, okapi and gaur births this year....

I'd like to see Bristol increase their flock of Blue Penguins from 1.
I'd like to see Edinburgh have some King penguin/Rockhopper chicks this year, and for Drusillas/Belfast to breed Rockhoppers.

Also like to see a UK collection attempt to keep great apes in a space with natural trees they have access to, unless there is already a collection I don't know about (Blair drummond?)

I'd like Wildwood to open their long-planned 'wild wood' for 'recreated' aurochs and tarpan....

I'd like to see a safe, successful elephant birth at colchester, and Black Rhino/ Asian elephant pregnancies announced at chester.

I'd like to see Pygmy tree shrews return to a UK collection.....and for the lone giant otter at the Chestnut centre to get an unrelated mate of breeding age...

As for reality(!), my priorities for this year are to see the Rare Species Conservation Centre (preferably once tree kangaroos and smooth-coated otters arrive), Highland Wildlife Park (tho I'll wait if they announce musk ox are due, in my dreams!), and the new Orang exhibit at colchester zoo. I would also like to see the tapir calf at Port Lympne once it is a little older.

johnstoni, I believe there is a black rhino pregnant at Chester (Kitani). It was announced on the forums a month or so, ago. I doubt the zoo would announce it until she has given birth.

1. Cheetahs to return to Chester!
2. Baby Bornean Orangs at Chester
3. An improvement to the gorilla group at London
4. Sloth Bears getting a better life at Whipsnade
5. Orang exhibit at Colchester
6. Bird house renovations at London
7. Budongo and possible chimp group enlargements
8. Phillippine crocs at London and Chester

1 New orang-utan house at colchester zoo
2 budongo to open
3 new mokeys and apes come to monkey world
4 More gorrilas at jersey
5 new births
6 cheetahs arrive at whipsande
7 howletts sends more apes back into the wild
8 orangutan births in gernal

I'd like to see Bristol increase their flock of Blue Penguins from 1.

where did they get their penguin from? And are there others in Europe? Because there's Buckley's chance of any little blues coming out of NZ to overseas zoos, and probably the same chance of any coming out of Australia.

Cologne also keeps them and Bristol were considering sending their penguin to Germany. It's such a shame that out of 10 imported, only one survives.

1 - opening of Budongo and living links at Edinburgh
2 - Arrival of gaur and kulan at Edinburgh
3 - Arrival of Europe's only? at Chester (according to zoogiraffe)
4 - Arrival of north African cheetahs at Whipsnade and Chester
5 - sloth bears at Whipsnade
6 - Opening of Amur tiger exhibit at hwp
7 - tree kangaroo arrival at Belfast
8 - crocodile swamp at Paignton and orang utan exhibit at Colchester
9 - unusual species arriving at RSCC, Kent.
10 - potential okapi pregnancies at Chester, Bristol, London and Marwell

I had a look at the new Crocodile house at Paignton yesterday. It's on schedule to open April 11th and plans to show four species of crocs.

Cuban, they already have these off show, Nile, Estuarine/Saltwater and maybe young gavials

I spent ages looking for two last September, my chances of seeing one have just decreased by 50%.

I also want to see the sousliks, they didn't seem to be on show on my last visit, oh, and the Lesser Kudu. I took about 6 photos lat year and then realised I was looking at nyala.

The Cuban Crocodiles at Paignton.

African walk-through aviary at Chester, and the cheetahs (just to see if they look any different from the south African ones).

I'll bet they don't... Remember Cheetahs are believed to have experienced an evolutionary genetic botteneck not that long ago and are all thought very closely related- so I'd expect not much difference at all in that case.
