Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

I emailed the Zoo about the article TZFan posted and some other questions.

Their reply:

“We have not seen the article. There are still a lot of conversations that have to take place regarding Tam. If things work out for the best Tam will arrive in the fall. The sibling rhinos are not scheduled to breed at this time. Crocodiles are not planned for Africa at this point. It depends on the space left when Hippopotamus is done. At this point the architectual plans for Hippopotamus change often. The size has varied since conception. With construction going on we are fighting for every inch of space for Hippopotamus. Come see Wild Dog, Meerkat, birds and hoofstock on June 29th. Stay warm."

Update

1. Santos the baby Ocelot was taken out of the nursery and moved to the Cheetah Encounter where here will be part of the shows during the summer.
2. There are 2 new small unidentified birds in Wings of the World. One in the Grasslands exhibit, and the other in the finch exhibit.
3. The bonobo was named Kibibi.
4. The zoo started constructing two rock walls in front of the wild dog exhibit.
5. The American Alligator in manatee springs was taken off exhibit and the 'improving your zoo' sign went up.
 
Ya like I said I wasnt sure about the reliableness of the sumatran rhino article. Im not surprised the zoo didnt know about it. It was really just a chance google search for news on zoos. Havent seen anything else since.

Maybe he will come... maybe he wont. Seems to be a reoccuring theme when it comes to the sumatran rhinos. Will they? Wont they? What are they doing? Oh well time will tell us what happens.

Delay, Delay,yet more Delay. It seems very much like that but time just isn't on their side anymore as given her age Suci needs to have a calf pretty much now, rather than leaving it any later if her reproductive potential is not to be compromised or endangered. And they keep emphasising that part themselves, but still nothing has happened. The latest reason given is that they are waiting on Harapan to mature- at 6 years I thought he probably would be by now.

Perhaps all the publicity they put out a few months ago about mating the siblings together as a last ditch resort, was actually also an oblique attempt to encourage the Malaysians to play ball by sending them the unrelated male 'Kertam/Tam' from Borneo.

In case this hasn't already been mentioned. When I went to the zoo on Sunday, the steller's sea eagle exhibit viewing was partially closed because of nesting.

Is there any word on what hoofstock species will be going into the big field exhibit in Africa? Heard a lot of rumors, but nothing substantial other than that there would be zebras of some sort.

The page for Africa on the zoo's website currently says "gazelle, lesser kudu, and impala".
 
Does anyone know who many Imperial Shag's cinci has ? Also, have they had any breeding success with them ?
 
That sucks. I believe they sent a few out to Europe a few years ago as well. I wonder how those ones are doing ?
 
AFRICA update:
The zoo finally built the hoofstock fence (thin and rocky) on the left side of the Plains exhibit. However, it is only a few feet tall and it connects to the wild dog exhibit, which can only mean one thing... Like the lions there will be a moat that separates the dogs from the hoostock. There will also not be an observational deck viewing for the dogs as the plan says but it will be up front, glass viewing. This was really hard to explain but I do have a photo.

Other updates
1. The alligator in Manatee Springs is still off exhibit
2. Behind the camels and in the off exhibit area I saw two red pandas. For those who don't know, the panda exhibit is not even close to the camels, so I found this extremely rrare and unusual.
3. Unlike every other exhibit in Wildlife Canyon, there was red tape in front of the warty pigs.
4. World of the Insect is currently closed. The zoo is putting up new facts around every wall of the building.
5. The supposed Goldies Lorikeet in Wings of the World is actually a Red-flanked Lorieet.
6. There is another unidentified bird in WotW, but it is in the South America exhibit.
7. I heard a docent say that Saari the Bactrian Camel might give birth within a couple of weeks.
