ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Zoo 2014 #1

.......Snow Leopard (the first breeding in the UK occurred there in 1959).....

This is a confusing one....

Certainly several editions of the Whipsnade Zoo guide mention that the first snow leopards to be born in the UK were born at Whipsnade in 1959.

Yet the ZSL Annual Report for 1959 makes no mention of snow leopards being born at Whipsnade that year. However, the ZSL Annual Report for 1960 lists two snow leopards as being born at Whipsnade that year along with the claim that these were the first to be born at either Whipsnade or Regent’s Park.

Whipsnade: Captive Breeding for Survival” (Elspeth Huxley, 1981) also records that the first British snow leopards were born at Whipsnade in 1960.

A lot of the temporary barriers separating the impala and kudu have now been removed, so looks like a full release is imminent! Will be an interesting mix if this to be their permanent home. The kudu were certainly very prominent today!

Not sure if I dreamt this but was Law Daedelus once home to a species of antelope? Lechwe? I seem to remember seeing antelope on the lake's island as a child.

I particularly remember the enclosure surrounding Lake Daedelus housing nilgai for many years. (When I have a little more time I'll look through some old guidebooks to see what other species were kept here historically.)

Yep. Why don't they try putting the pelicans on the lake in the Asian Drive through area? Lake Daedalus really isn't big enough for them, and mixing waterfowl and pelicans is seldom a happy experience for the former.

Another yak calf born, this time a girl!

The black & white ruffed lemur have moved into the lemur walk-through. They currently occupy one side of the house and have outside access overnight.

the site is 80 acres, think that is including the railway, which doesn't take up much room.

Many thanks. Admiring Yorkshire Wildlife Park's developments for polar bear got me thinking about future potential for the site. I can but dream!:)

It would appear that the zoo is advertising future one-to-one "Meet the Animals" experiences for lion, elephant, giraffe and sloth bear.

Reticulated giraffe Jengo (offspring of Uno & Ijuma) has moved to Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
A new male giraffe will arrive soon from the Netherlands.

Spent a great afternoon up at the Zoo and took some cool photo's (May upload them, but I'm not sure how you do that!). Saw the Blesbok for the first time, through a couple of fences and was awesome to see the Impala and Kudu out in the main paddock.

Also saw the Waterbuck in with the Zebra's for the first time, plus was surprised to see no Wolves...unless I missed some info on that!
