.......Snow Leopard (the first breeding in the UK occurred there in 1959).....
This is a confusing one....
Certainly several editions of the Whipsnade Zoo guide mention that the first snow leopards to be born in the UK were born at Whipsnade in 1959.
Yet the ZSL Annual Report for 1959 makes no mention of snow leopards being born at Whipsnade that year. However, the ZSL Annual Report for 1960 lists two snow leopards as being born at Whipsnade that year along with the claim that these were the first to be born at either Whipsnade or Regent’s Park.
“Whipsnade: Captive Breeding for Survival” (Elspeth Huxley, 1981) also records that the first British snow leopards were born at Whipsnade in 1960.
