Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2020

Are not all Yorkshire's Polars, males...?
I assume so, I was wrong-tracked by the mention of female polar bear Flocke (born 2007 in Nuernberg and apparently at Antibes at the moment).

If the poster that mentioned Flocke can elaborate on mentioning her in his post ..., that would be nice.

There was a discussion/rumour (when Rasputin arrived) that Flocke would also potentially move to Yorkshire once her current cubs are old enough to leave her.

Flocke is the mother of Rasputin's cubs and still in France with them.
Hes was removed to prevent him harming the cubs

Nisha is right that that was the original plan but whether that is still the case is unknown

TBH: YWP was lucky to be allowed to get both male and female polar bear fairly soon on opening their exhibit(s). Being part of the EAZA/EEP and the animals on loan being at the discretion of other zoos and EEP/EAZA means the species coordinator decides who gets to go where.

Personally, probably a good thing the male Rasputin now has a breeding recommendation at Tallinn Zoo. If we care to look overseas to US and Canada the North American AZA the situation is not so rosy.

YWP has never had a female polar bear.

Flocke is indeed currently housed at Marineland Antibes with her three cubs, meaning she has currently produced four cubs with Rasputin. As for Flocke moving to YWP when her three cubs eventually move on, this was, as far as I am aware, only brought up by Marineland Antibes, I believe they may be looking at moving out of displaying polar bears but I am not 100% sure, I know there has been some work done recently on the polar bear exhibit i.e. the pools made deeper which is why the cubs were not given access to them until they were a bit older. The keepers did say they would like to have a female eventually but did not think it was likely to happen as they felt there was a high probability of the studbook recommending him (Rasputin) another female to breed with.

For anyone who's interested, Flocke and Rasputins first cub was named Hope, she was born on 26 November 2014 and currently resides at Orsa Rovdjurspark (Orsa Predator Park), Sweden.

It may have been mentioned but in June and July planning applications were permitted for a campsite for 100 tents near to the sewage works on unused land named “roar and snore” to be used for families to stay over. The second application was for a pumping and filtration building for brackish water needed for an exhibit.

So it looks like the expansion is going to carry on hopefully.

A video today has been published on their Facebook page which details that they now hold 3 female red pandas & a male/female pair of the smooth-coated otters. No information on from where either species were obtained.
Yes they do I went yestarday and we saw all 3 red pandas and just 1 smooth coated otter.

Went on Wednesday last week and saw the two new otters and three female red pandas, adorable.

I'm taking my very first trip to YWP tomorrow and I can't wait! I'll be sure to post my thoughts on here :) Looking forward to seeing the black rhino, leopards, dik-diks and unsurprisingly polar bears the most!

Looks like the Sealion and/or penguin exhibits mentioned previously for the expansion will be happening!

@pipaluk do you think Yorkshire Wildlife Park will acquire thease Semi-Aquatic species of Mammals from the now defunct Living Coast’s in Torquay? I would not be at all shocked if thease species are arriving from Living Coast’s.I say this as following the closure The Wild Planet Foundation which owned Living Coast’s announced that all of the animals within the collection had been found new home’s. With Yorkshire Wildlife Park welcoming both Penguin‘s and Fur-Seal’s the obvious place of coming from would be Living Coast’s. This is as it would make more sense for Yorkshire to receive two species from the same destination if possible rather than from two separate destinations.

Kind regards The Hedgehog
